I don't get how these "sell you characters" work. Does it mean you simply get the artwork or is it that you can use that character to your liking? Even if you don't buy it, no one is stopping you from drawing it personally in a sketchbook, so I don't see the point.

artist take time to make and produce their designs. theres nothing wrong woth someone who wants to but that character to use for their own personal use. its also a considerate way to support artists you like.

It's similar to designer originals in fashion. A designer can indefinitely rent an original to an actress. The person wearing the dress can't sell the dress and they don't own the dress, but they can attend cocktail parties and red carpet functions in the dress and benefit from it. Other people can copy the dress and make look-alikes, just like how other people can draw the adopt design. However, the designer original and the person who is allowed to wear the designer original have a sort of "greater validity." There's an underlying "fashion label" feel to it that people in the know and in the community respect and honor.
It's also similar to selling rights to use intellectual property (IP). For example, Disney can offer the right to a game studio to create a video game based off of The Little Mermaid. The Little Mermaid doesn't belong to the game studio, but they're given the permission to make content using characters from The Little Mermaid as long as they follow the contract.
Usually in the case of business world, the IP-holder (Disney in the above example) pays the game studio to make the game but in exchange, they get the profits (not just money but also in attention, views, public relations etc) made from the game once it's published.
In the case of the online world, the IP-holder (the artist, in this case), sells the right to create content publicly to the person who pays the highest bid. They then get to use the design according to the terms of a loose contract.
Hope this clears things up a bit!

hey hey hey. you get to adopt these "arts" for a low price of $110....
i also dont like these. but theyre made for children with access to their parents credit card.
because an adult with at least a brain would not pay for nothing.
right click and save if you like it.

this bitch under me replied to me then blocked me, lmao so here's the comment i was originally gonna put:
it doesn't really matter whether it was too months ago or not, the fact you used the fucking think poster is just so hilarious to me
if you are gonna make an argument, don't block the person your arguing with as if that makes you win the argument, kinda pathetic tbh lmao "oh i don't like someone's opinion!! i'll reply then block them!! i'm too scared to actually argue with someone"

Oh ho ho ho boy you made the worst statement to anger an ENTIRE COMMUNITY XD
How fun your stupidity is. Let me explain why.
1. They are not "arts", you get to buy full ownership of the character, including their original artwork.
Much like, say, how a game-developer can "borrow" a character by purchasing certain rights for just using
the character and not fully own it, much like how GameWorkshop sold usage rights to developers of their
WarHammer characters. And, of course, the prices for that won't be cheap. This applies to music, too!
2. If you think this is how you can justify this behavior as well as Disney's purchase of Marvel and,
by definition, their characters, then... Boy you lived under a rock all your life.
Of course I used these examples to illustrate that these business practices are normal and definitely
"at home" within the art community. be it at a smaller or bigger scale.
BTW dude.. your gallery sucks ballz xD
You clearly traced that Florette drawing woah.. you are definitely a thief no wonder you understand adopts.

It isn't the artist's fault that people bid over each other until the prices get very high... I would never buy an adopt myself (I struggle with money), but the artists selling adopts usually use the income to pay for bills, they don't live a life full of luxury, and if someone can afford buying an adopt, it is lots of help

Just because you dislike a certain community/practice/business doesn't mean it's okay to disrespect those who are in it. These people have passions -- whether they're the artist/designer or the buyer -- and they are just as valid as people who pour all their money into things like clothes/shoes, vehicles, and other such things. Please don't knock them down because you think all this is "nothing". This all means something to the adoptable community.
To everyone else, PLEASE watermark your content. This is why you should protect your works and send full resolution, unwatermarked files to only the buyer.

Would you steal a shirt from a fashion show? No, you wouldn't. Its an original piece from the artist. Just buy it. Don't steal?

artists work hard to make their designs, idk why paying them for that work is a bad thing. also, thats how supply and demand works, dummy. the higher the demand, the higher the price. it makes more sense when you factor in the time artists take to make designs as well. instead of a billion micro transactions, you make fewer adopts at a higher quality that cost more.

You honestly don't understand how adopts work, so your first reaction is to shit on them and the people who buy them? Wise old spirit, please, tell us your magic ways of making friends and being oh so kind and understanding!
Also, have fun getting along in an artist community by being a thief. That'll get you far.

you basically own full ownership of the character design. not sure what else there is to say... it's not like this ownership is dictated by other people's ability to freely draw it in their personal sketchbooks or whatever.

Tbh it's confusing too, but what it is is that you OWN the design and character, however other people can still draw it. It's just that you own the specific design, aka you can write their story and stuff, Make sense?

mindlessdolly In reply to M1m1kyu [2019-04-23 09:06:32 +0000 UTC]
It goes a bit deeper than that, owning a design means you can use it commercially (unless there's a note you can not, but I have not seen it under any adopts)

Weirdly enough, all i can think of is that it's style of evolution resembles pokemon while its baby form and number of evolution indicates it's a digimon. Just had to get that out.
