Wow, you got it really dark in the background. I tend to have trouble with contrast. ^_^" I think I'm afraid of getting something too dark and then not being able to lighten it, so I guess I stop too soon and end up with faded looking stuff.
It looks really nice once all the shading's done. I guess proper shading really helps get things to look correct.

Thanks. I used to draw lightly too. I had the same fear that I wouldn't be able to erase. What I do now is layer the dark areas, first with a medium pencil like an HB, then a darker one (4B), then the darkest (9B). I learned that from this great artist: =pbird12

Thank you Aaron! The lighting you used in the photo provided a great opportunity to draw the facial features in a way not often seen. It was both a challenge and a pleasure to attempt to recreate such an enchanting image of Devon. Thank you so much!

Interesting!! So you prefer to start with the facial features and hair, and then define the face's form with shading and highlights later?

Thank you! Yes, I save the shading for after everything is in its place. I usually start with the darkest areas, then work my way into the light. It just so happens the eyes, mouth and parts of the hair were the darkest in this case.
