Steampunk is a sub-genre of Science-Fiction
the core thing of it is this: imagine the future would have come about 100 years earlier than it did! technology in the victorian era as in, steamdriven machines, cars, robots, time machines! \o/
devices we use nowadays but without electricity, ran by gears and springs!
the materials are what they used back then. mainly: copper, brass, leather and wood.
most things associated with steampunk are: goggles, victorian clothing, top hats of all kinds, gears, pocket watches (actually clocks and clockparts of all kinds), time machines, ray-guns, airships, pirates and stuff like that.
you can google steampunk if you want to see what it looks like.
it got pretty 'mainstream' within the last years. maybe cuz of movies like 'city of ember', 'wild wild west' and the 2006 version of 'the time machine'.
