This medium-sized spinosaur is well adapted for a semiaquatic lifestyle. Commonly found around the many rivers, lakes, swamps and shores, it spends most of its time basking in the sun or swimming in search for prey. The swamp variant is colored for camouflage among the water plants and algae, ideal for ambush as a significant portion of its prey consists of terrestrial animals that come to feed, drink or cross the water, though it also feeds on fish, amphibians and other aquatic animals. The coastal variant is less focused on hunting terrestrial animals and more on fishing. Both variants of Ichthyovenator are also known to be occasional frugivores- the swamp variant more so. Despite their size, they tend to avoid too large prey, preferring targets of lower risk.
