Besides the awesome Ridley, I love the little Metroid hiding behind Samus. Is it just a random Metroid or is it supposed to be the Baby from Super Metroid?

for everyone, they are the most amazing rivals who dare to fight one another over and over til' one is dead. their head on clash and battles fascinate us every time we pick up and play and fight the beast with the items we acquire and use the skills we learned to achieveΒ victory over the foul beast and feel so achieved when it's all over.

Oh. My apologizes. But yeah, I had no problems with the whole freezing thing. She watched Ridley kill (and probably consume) her parents. Yeah, she has P.T.S.D. Why didn't we see it before? Well, system limitations. Also the previous stories weren't story-based. This one was. Plus PTSD can come and go. Also, she thought Ridley was dead. She already killed him twice (since Prime Trilogy is now non-canon).
As for Adam and her desire to follow his orders. Um, he's her THIRD father figure. Her first was her Dad... he's dead. Her second was Old Bird... he MIGHT be dead, I'm not sure. Her third? Adam. And she left him under VERY bad circumstances. Cleary, she's trying to make up for her behavior and reconnect to him. Plus she's intruding on someone else's mission. She may be a bounty hunter, but Adam was ALLOWING her to be there. He could've easily said no. And I think he tried, I can't remember. As for the Varia suit? Gameplay and story segregation. It's not a Metroid if there's no fire zone you have to panicky run through. Although weren't their comms off at the time?
Samus' personality? I think that people have built up their own ideal of what Samus should be. So it wouldn't matter what her persona was, people would be pissy because it didn't match their idealic pedestal. Plus cultural differences. If I'm not mistaken, in Japan, keeping your emotions suppressed means control. Precision. Perfection. The US? Bland. Boring. Plus they could've hired a better V.A. Like her Smash Bros. Brawl one. Or Laura Bailey. Her Lust/Tier/Cloud of Darkness voice is pretty hot.
As for the heels... I don't fucking know. I don't know why they gave them to her, I don't know why people are bitching about them. Sexual? Please, her zero suit is more sexual, yet no one bitched. Besides, heels are not sexy. They hurt women's feet, you can't run in them, and they turn the inexperienced into clumsy goofballs. Yeah... reeeeeal sexy there.

You're pretty right about people's expectations. Most of these Other M haters don't know about the manga, or Old Bird, or Ridley killing her parents, or whatever. They each had their interpretation of Samus, and obviously, Other M's version didn't line up with what they had in mind.
As for the Zero suit, there was a ton of bitching too. There still is.
