"Xanthos" is the adjective used, and it can be used to denote yellow, light brown and anything in between, often with a tinge of red. So... there's a broad range of shades to choose from ^_^

Actually, the role of colour in ancient indoeuropean texts is a very interesting topic. The main divide was between brightness and darkness - hence why black, blue and, iirc, green could be described with the same word, why horses are often "shining", "bright" and the like, why the sea's hue is compared to that of wine. Whether it's the Rigveda, the Iliad, or even the much later Poetic Edda, there is always a certain - impressionistic, I guess? - quality to the use of colour.
