So for a while now, I had this illustration in mind, and here we are a week later with Polish troops advancing on Bolshevik positions, somewhere, in the mist. Maybe as part of the Northern Front? Who knows?

The troops are wearing the standard wz.1919 uniform, carrying Mauser rifles, the French light machinegun Mle 1915 and overall French webbing. As there was no standard uniform per se in the war, the uniforms and equipment varied widely from unit to unit. The only units that were equipped uniformally were from the Greater Poland Army or the Blue Army under General Józef Haller. Either way, such a set-up is your serotypical silhouette of a Polish troopie usually portrayed in the media.

As we are approaching the 100th Anniversary of the war's conclusion, I will hopefully be releasing more illustrations as we progress towards August 15th. I will be trying to capture all the different major battles, especially those fought by the Blue army - as that particular force is dear to my heart. My very own great-great-grandfather was a soldier under General Haller, and I am keen to commemorate his memory with these series of illustrations.
