“I…I don’t know how to say this…” Van gulped. It was a conversation he had rehearsed in his mind several times before this moment. There were variations and each time he was nervous of what the reaction was going to be.

Van had been dating Vibes for a few months now. Van had been a recent arrival to Reynard City. Like Vibes, he had the ability to go from human to fox form and was also dealing with the trauma of losing his home planet.

While Vibes was a great person to hang around with, things had recently not been easy. In some respects, Van got the chance to see behind the curtain. On the surface, Vibes was very outgoing, friendly and couldn’t resist putting on a show when fighting crime and robot armies alike.

It wasn’t that things were terrible. In fact they had some great times. But there were things below the surface and Van was very much aware that there were issues Vibes was going through that he just couldn’t help her with.

He held her hand, sighing. As he took a deep breath, he was interrupted…

“I think we should break up too.”

Van was taken aback. Of all the scenarios he had ran in his head, this was not one of them.

“It…it’s not you…” Van started.

Vibes laughed. “It is me. It’s a bit you as well. Either way it’s not working.”

Van looked confused, not sure to laugh, be offended or have some quip ready back.

Vibes held Van’s hand, looking in his eyes.

“It’s okay… I…I thought I was over him…but I’m not. And it’s not fair to hurt you because of that.”

Vibes kissed Van on the cheek, causing him to slightly blush. “Can I ask you something?”

Van nodded, unsure what was about to come next.

“Can we still hang out? You know, just as friends.”

Van smiled.

“Sure.”

Insect Girl watched as Van walked away from Vibes. I don’t know what he sees in her, she thought. He deserves to be with someone who could make him happy. Someone who can really look after him.

Insect Girl used to be Jenny, a secretary who worked for Michael Knox. One day she discovered that her boss was actually the robot Mega Fox posing as Knox. This resulted in a transformation by the interdimensional being Warp King, turning her into a henchwoman with comparative insect strength, flight, a stinger that could cause people to swell up and inflate, plus a cocoon power that could temporarily turn people into insects.

There was something about Van. Whether he was in human or fox form, Insect Girl felt the weight of an intense crush. And in her mind she pictured him, his cute form puffed up and bloated, the mental picture was so sweet and adorable.

In theory, her job was to be part of Mega Fox’s force, to do his bidding. While capturing heroes was part of it, she didn’t want Van to be merely another robot or for him to be messed about (Well, at least she didn’t want anyone else apart from her doing it.)

Without hesitation, she swooped down. Van instinctively rolled away.

“What the…?”

“Hi Sweetie” giggled Insect Girl.

“Not today, I’m not in the mood” snarled Van.

“Trouble in paradise?” Insect Girl quipped back.

“None of your business.” Insect Girl tried not to laugh, Van’s face seemed abundantly clear that he really didn’t want to engage in banter or play around.

Van transformed into his fox form, firing dark bolts of energy that Insect Girl swerved and dodged.

“My, my, we really do have our grumpy trousers on today, don’t we?” laughed Insect Girl.

“Leave me alone!”

“You heard what the man said.”

Insect Girl groaned. What a shocker, there was AK Girl, right on time to spoil the fun.

“Back off Foxy McLeatherpants”

AK Girl glared at her. “He said leave him alone. STRENGTH MODE!”

AK Girl grabbed Insect Girl, who in turn grabbed back. The pair both gripped tight, neither wanting to give in. With a massive effort, Insect Girl thrust her head forward, the headbutt knocking AK Girl down to the ground.

It only took a moment, but for a second she was dazed. In that time, Insect Girl plunged her stinger into Van. Almost immediately, his cheeks enormously swelled up, his body become round almost instantly.

“HA! HA! You’re in perfect shape, you’re perfectly spherical!” cackled Insect Girl.

“MUMPH!” Van couldn’t talk through his swollen lips, as they began to float above.

AK Girl shook off her momentary dizziness, getting to her feet. She looked around to see a force of megabots around her.

No time for the normal show, I’ve got to save Van, she thought. She ripped the arm off one megabot, using it as a bat to smash the head off another. She then hurled the arm as another megabot approached, again taking its head clean off, before a swift jump kick allowed her to knock another into a final megabot.

“SPEED MODE!” she yelled, desperately trying to keep up as Van floated away. But it was already too late…

“Good work Jenny” Caramel Girl grinned, as she saw her floating toward Silverfox Labs on top of the ballooned Van. “Mega Fox is going to be super chuffed.”

Insect Girl snorted. Mega Fox didn’t seem like the easily chuffed type. Perhaps if she was lucky there might be a smile.

“The best part is you know AK Girl is coming for him” Caramel Girl grinned. “And when she does, I’m going to blow her up until she pops!”

“Right.” Insect Girl groaned. Caramel Girl was obsessed, she thought…

I have to be professional, thought Vibes. I need to focus…need to…

But as she thought this, other thoughts entered her head. Could she have been better? Van was such a cool guy and she had messed it up. And all for someone who…

The thoughts never really went away. It was more than thoughts, it was flashbacks of when Mark…

She couldn’t finish the sentence. That look of horror on his face. I should have done better, she thought.

It was worse, Vibes thought. Now Van was captured and I should have been able to stop that. I’m supposed to be the saviour of the universe, but it seems every time when it matters…

Vibes flopped down. She had failed and once again someone she cared of was going to suffer. ..

Then it was like a switch went off in her head.

No.

I’m not going to let this happen. I can still get him back…I have to.

“SPEED MODE!” She yelled, charging toward Silverfox Labs.

“Open wide! Here comes the airplane!” giggled Insect Girl, shoving a spoonful of chocolate spread into Van’s mouth.

“MUMPH!” he scowled. He wanted to curse and berate her, but his mouth was so full.

“You know you can’t keep him right?” Caramel Girl glared at Insect Girl.

“But…he’s my prisoner. I’m responsible for him. Like a Tamagotchi.”

“You’re an idiot.”

An alarm blared. Caramel Girl looked at the security cameras, each one registering a blur followed by smashed up cameras.

“She’s here.”

“It’s not fair!” pouted Insect Girl.

“Well, if we destroy her, maybe Mega Fox will let you keep him” Caramel Girl stated in a patronising, sarcastic way, as if Insect Girl was a toddler in the nursery.

AK Girl smashed and knocked the megabots aside, desperate to get to Van. He’s got to be in here somewhere…

Before she had a chance to think, she dived away from a caramel blast.

“Sorry AK Girl, visiting hours are over.”

AK Girl ducked and dipped, lurching her body away from the blasts, knowing just one could cause her to balloon up.

“You know I’ll keep this in mind when I write my online review” she snapped back.

“Ugh, just keep still and stop talking!” Caramel Girl snarled, her blaster clicking.

“Out of ammo and out of luck!” laughed AK Girl, gearing up to hit Caramel Girl. But as she did so, Insect Girl blocked the punch, the grip causing her knees to buckle.

“I don’t need to inflate you to beat you” Insect Girl scowled. “Van is mine and there’s nothing you can do about it.”

Caramel Girl laughed as Insect Girl hurled AK Girl to the ground.

“Not nice feeling weak, is it?”

“Van…doesn’t belong…to anyone…” AK Girl groaned. “And…you…know it.”

Insect Girl stopped. This wasn’t right. AK Girl was on the floor, she was beaten. But now she was thinking about it? Her Van was her own personal puffball, who she was going to feed sweets to and bounce up and down on his belly…

“PSY…CHIC…MODE!” strained AK Girl, a blue wave knocking Caramel Girl and Insect Girl down.

Struggling, she crawled to the room to find Van.

“Van…It’s okay…I’m…here…”

Vibes struggled to get to her feet. She felt drained, barely able to lift herself up.

“MUMPH! MUMPH!” Van wanted to tell her to get away, to forget about him. But before he could gesture or do something to tell her to get away, AK Girl grabbed on to him.

“Focus with me Van.”

Van shut his eyes, his dark energy flowing, charging AK Girl in the process.

“STEAL MODE!”

Now it was AK Girl’s turn, her body swelling up and enormously inflating, to the point where she smashed through a wall. Van, now in his normal form, gripped on.

“They’re getting away!” scowled Caramel Girl. “Come on, get after them.”

“AAGH! My leg!” groaned Insect Girl. “It hurts”

“Seriously? All that power and you can’t go after them because your leg hurts?”

“It really hurts! I need a splint and a bandage!”

Caramel Girl groaned. “We’re going to need more than that when Mega Fox sees we let the heroes get away and one of the lab walls has smashed…”

Later, Vibes and Van were both restored to normal form.

“Thanks for what you did back there” Vibes smiled.

“What are friends for?”

“Right…”

“Want to get some chilli?”

“Sure.”

And with that, the pair relaxed, getting back on track after a bizarre moment. But then Vibes dropped a bombshell.

“I think Insect Girl let us get away.”

“Seriously?” Van snorted. “She was desperate to shove chocolate spread in my blimped mouth.”

Vibes shrugged. “Okay if you say so…”

Insect Girl sighed. For a moment, she had what she always wanted. Van was right there, the big balloon fantasy came true. So why did it feel so…hollow?

“Come on doofus, we need to go back to work” Caramel Girl snarled.

“Right” Insect Girl nodded, though she was more hesitant. “Back to work…”
