If you're keeping up with pokemon B/W, then you've probably noticed this bad boy. N is awesome. N died for your sins.N = awesome
Anywho, did a study from the perspective of an artist, trying to gain a little more insight into his in-game character.
Right. As of 8/26/10, Draikinator is calling this. Just wait until I'm right, ya'll will all be like 'oh, she's so awesome. Draik is so awesome.'
Heck yeah I am.

I'm gonna be hoenst though, I was pretty surprised how accurate it ended up being. all I had was like some blurry corocoro scans and some bad translations haha
I must say, I'm rather impressed with myself. I'm also glad I could show so many people what good character design looks like!

It was amazing. It's given me so many more tools to analyze not only N more, but other characters as well!
It reminded me yet again of how much effort was put into black and white. I loved not only the plot and elements never before seen in PokΓ©mon games, but the layers upon layers in the characters. There are things that tell so much more about them, generally laying in artwork, trivia, and name meanings. They went really deep with N's character, in my opinion, deeper than any other of the other bw characters. He's nothing like we've seen before in PokΓ©mon, and he's completely fascinating to me. I'll spend days on end thinking about his character.

Oh yeah totally! I mean... I did this for 4chan initially (which is why the date in the description is two days earlier than the upload date) because there were so many arguments... people were like "he's gonna be an angel!" and people saying they worked for nintendo and were spilling spoilers and whatnot. So I did this.
And it just blew my mind that I was right, honestly. I mean, his character design could have been, you know, NOT too indicitive of his character- like maybe it wasn't a good design. but the fact it was so PERFECT just. wow. wowowoowowowowowsooowowowowow pokemon ughΒ

Oh yes! I wrote this a few days after the images contained in the write up here were leaked on 4chan. Only the official image was actually official and confirmed as real then, everyone was operating on rumors and we knew very very little about the game. I've played the game now!Β

dragonkingofthestars [2013-05-22 02:48:34 +0000 UTC]
I don't quite get this, it's the theory.
What do you mean about circles, triangles, squares ectra in regard to character design?
π: 0 β©: 1
Polyhexian In reply to dragonkingofthestars [2013-05-23 16:56:49 +0000 UTC]
Exactly what I said. You build more complicated from simpler shapes. When you draw a person, you usually start with the head, drawing a circle. Or perhaps the chest- with a square, or a triangle, and then you flesh it out from there. The basic shapes that make up a more complicated character lend heavily to the perception of that character.

dragonkingofthestars In reply to Polyhexian [2013-05-23 17:30:28 +0000 UTC]
I think i get (Some of) it now
so a big barrel chested guy would have a square chests since we associate that square shape with strength, while circles are softer, curvy.
I don't think i get the association triangles get with 'moral dilemmas or hunched over villeins' as you put it, though.

Polyhexian In reply to dragonkingofthestars [2013-05-23 17:47:35 +0000 UTC]
They're 'wobbly.' As in, morally ambiguous.
Okay, here's an example.
[link]
The first is made of all triangles, the second is made of squares, the thir, circles. They are all essentially the same character design but with different shape traits. Which one looks like the scariest, the most evil? The first one, obviously.
The least menacing? Mr circles there looks like the bumbling sidekick of the three.

Do you happen to have a chart of basic characterization techniques? Or will you make one? I think a lot of people would benefit from it, especially mary sue type people. I am also very curious as to what exactly consists everything in characters' designs. I understand the shapes theory you had there, but I would have never guessed N's rubik's cube would have had any real thought behind it. I think if everyone read this study of n they would be more interested and attentive to N's particular design, since it has such meaning behind it, from even how his hands are positioned.
But all that aside, well done, very interesting and spot on.

I haven't finished the game yet, but spoilers are everywhere, so...

I apologize for the double post, but I know that if you analyzed other characters, it wouldn't be a 'prediction', but I'd love to see how you break down the character with just appearance. C:

that just messed with my mind.....I kinda figured this stuff out after the first or second encounter with N during the game. Well, not in the technical way you did, but just because I have a very good judge of character. I always know which bad guys will turn goog, or which good guyse really bad guys.
