Description
UPDATE (09 NOV '12): Got some new design sketches for the project "Re:Loading" which is like a re-imagined version of this old (and somewhat crappy) animation reel... It's just gonna be 3D animated fighting shorts...Re:Loading Character Sketches [2012]
Maaya (the human character) will be appearing on both UNCHAINED and Re:Loading projects (her costumes and armored-suit would be different to match the overall theme of each project)
---
UPDATE (28 AUG '10): Although this piece was just a 3D animation reel, a graduating piece. The 2 original characters in this reel have taken off with me since end of the year 2006 in the journey to create a story piece (which now landed with the name UNCHAINED)
Here are their designs' evolutions
Maaya (aka 'The Girl', 'The Bunny Girl', 'Killer Bunny') (Thumb no.1-6)
Onihime (aka 'The Fox', 'The Cyborg') (Thumb no.2-3)

Title:"NOW LOADING" 3D Animation
Director: Sitthichok Khunthaveelab
DA user: pommegenozide
Format: SWF Movie
File size: 5MB
Duration: 1.35 mins
-------------------------
This is my final project for my 3D animation class in VFS, Vancouver, Canada.
It was a one year long course (well, 11 months to be exact), we've got the 5 months to create and finish our own project (though we studied classes in the first 6 months).
It doesn't have any storyline in this piece, but I use the concept from the characters I've got for my own 3D&Comic projects. Though it may not have lots of animation because I focused more on the presentation, composition and style.
Comments and critiques are welcome as usual.
Thank you.
NOTE:
The music for this piece was done by sound design department at VFS (read "Original") and was copyrighted under VFS name and I've full right to use it for any non-commercial purposes.

Reminds me so much of Bloody Roar. Fantastic game that!
Love the characters here and the animation is really loose which is nice.
You VFS fellas really know your stuff. A lot of the reels are inspiring people at my university still. I'm coming up to my third year now, so hoping to do as awesome as you guys.

Thanks for your comment!
Haha I never looked at it that (BR) way, but now I see what you meant (I love that game also!)
Good luck with your study! With hard work and dedication... not only you can do as good as other people (me not included, didn't work hard enough in school ), you'll be able to do better! Cheers!

Thank you for your kind words.
Good luck with your 3D class, just do your best so you can draw and make 3D models of (and animate) things you like

This is really great. I'm actually taking a multimedia course at Algonquin college in Ottawa, Ontario that has a 3D class. Your video has really inspired me to work on my skills and get a career in 3D. If you got any advice for me it would be great. Again, a truly awe-inspiring piece of work.

Thank you so much for your kind words, it's hard to imagine my school work could inspired someone else (I'm glad). Good luck with your classes and feel free to ask if you have any question about animation or 3D in general. (that would be more logical than me giving out random advices)

Pretty good, just a couple of things I noticed.
Some of the movements are a little light and airy and should be a lot faster (such as the cutting motion the rabbit character makes).
Also that first shot of the wolf character has its arms pass through each other.

Thank you~
I like it when other artists took their time to give critique.
I had really poor schedule management back then, but it was inexcusable, not just the part you mentioned but now I see so many things need fixing
Arm crashing? oops!

Nice! Do they give you pre-made walk cycles or do you actually create all character movements...and do they help you with all of that?
I like the characters, nice job on this

Thank you,
To answer your questions, No, I didn't use any pre-made animation and I spent too much time modeling as well as rigging these babies so you could probably tell there wasn't much movement going on in this reel (talk about poor time management ).
And yes, there were teachers and people who helped students out with aspects from modeling, rigging to animation and editing processes... but to be honest I used more help on the model and rig than on animations. (not that I was too good in animation already, just poor management )
Thank you again for your time and your comment.

because of the dumb preview image I had and the obnoxious loading time?

Awsome ^^
I was kinda wondering how you made that "teleport" in and later the pulsing lines scene when the pink one got punched o_O
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
pommegenozide In reply to Arthur-XI [2009-02-03 22:07:10 +0000 UTC]
Thank you~
Everything is simple + straight forward if you render your stuffs separately. (and shorter render time too )
I couldn't quite remember how I did the teleport in details (honestly), but I think I used a layer of colored screenlines on top of the layer of the actual render of the characters, played around with blending option (it was Adobe After Effect) and animated a mask on top of those layers.
For the "pulsing lines" was even easier, I made those lines in PS (still images), put in on top of the other stuffs on screen (in AE), made and animating masks on top (so you have moving lines), added and animated motion (directional?) blur effect on top ... and there you go
Thanks again for commenting and asking, I appreciate that you're interested.

I think I actually got that o_O
I'm into 3d myself, and sometimes it can be hard to find some decent stuff, at least something new.
