Description
Joining the Dark Brotherhood was one big disappointment, as were the rest of the guilds. Everything happened too fast. In Morrowind and Oblivion you had to work your way to the top, in Skyrim...Do that, fetch me that, kill that and voila. They said we have unlimited quests. I thought that was great, until I started questing for the guilds. I talked to my first contact in the DB and went on murdering the target. Then I talked to my second contact, and murdered the target. And then my third contact...and the list goes on.
Or had to clean a cave of bears or wolves threatening the nearby village. Or escorted someone from a cave.
I don't even remember how many times I escorted someone back to their village but there were a lot. Might as well move their entire village inside the damn cave since they're so fond of caves.
I was so sad, until I summoned the Spectral Assassin and recognized that voice, then I was so happy I didn't mind continuing to murder people.
The bad thing about your ghost friend is that he charges at anything hostile while you sneak around. Or maybe it's just another bug.

Dark Brotherhood in Skyrim felt like a bunch of wannabes playing assassins and being lame doing so.

Lore wise, Skyrim's DB fits. It did crumble with the White-Gold war and nearly fell. So obviously the last standing guild would be wannabes playing Assassin. I just hope in the new game they're back to their full glory.
And that those Never ending quests will be fun!

You do bring a good point. They were disrupted, Motherless and even dropped out the Five Tenets. Lore-wise, it fits. But it does not explain or justify the general sloppiness of making the DB so very important after just 6 minor kills and 1 "important" kill (that contract for the alchemist girl is hardly "important" compared to killing Narfi or the mine boss in Dawnstar). A Jarl could be an important contract. An orc chief could be. Rigel Stone-Arm could be. But not a sentimental break-up.

May be that, or, if the money is not high, may be that the DB is just THAT rundown that they take any contract.
Or may be that they have to take any contract, meagre as it may be, just to live up to their names. That leads to "imma summon teh dark bros cuz im pissd", eventually and inevitably.
Aventus Aretino was quite justified, any person would want Grelod dead.
Whoever (I'm watching you, Wilhelm...) wanted Narfi dead, though, is petty.
Same goes for the miners, can't that man stand competition from a damn iron mine with his quicksilver mine?! Petty as crap.

Yep. It's sad though. Such a proud guild, feared throughout brought down to the lowest of low.
Me included, even if it's a game.
Some people are very petty, and if they'll go for the quickest solution. Even if it means bloodshed.

Wouldn't have quite the same flavor as getting proper cinematics, but yep.
Yet again, it'd break the immersion if you spent a few levels without killing Grelod. I happen to use the fact that the Dark Brotherhood sends assassins after me as the reason for eliminating them (whenever I have a good character). Like, really, I can't logically join them AFTER they tried to kill me (also on that logic, I never sided with the Imperials until I got Alternate Start).

I remember being excited after reading in an article, before Skyrim came out, that the DB contracts would continue after the questline ended and that the game would sometimes select people that you had frequently interacted with to be your next target to keep things interesting and dynamic.
And what did we get? Speak to the nameless, newly-spawned contact. Kill the equally nameless, newly spawned target. Rinse and repeat.
Great! This isn't incredibly, infuriatingly disappointing at all... (Blatant sarcasm)

I liked how you had to work your way up an organization in Morrowind and Oblivion. Since all of them were horribly short in Skyrim, I thought the infinite missions will be cool and all. I was actually quite happy when I heard about it until I started doing them...I gave up after the third one.

Pezkl2 In reply to Pomponorium [2013-01-30 12:38:23 +0000 UTC]
I know, it was a huge let-down. I mean, the questline was pretty good, it was just much too short, with convenient twists of fate to put you in charge - although at least it kind of made sense with the Dark Brotherhood. Becoming leader of the Companions felt so forced, and you didn't even have to be particularly good at magic to take charge of the College of Winterhold.
And being sold a line about how great the "radiant quests" were going to be, only to discover something so boring and repetitive as they were was very frustrating.

Regarding the College:
Mirabelle is the Headmistress, she runs the place.
Savos Aren is the Archmage, he is the "front", the "name", the target.
Putting the player in such a delicate and visible position is very convenient for Mirabelle and the others, as none of them will be targeted for being "The Archmage".

Yeah, DB was a bit of a fail. I loved how sneaky you had to be in Oblivion, like poisoning that Chief without getting spotted (how I love Detect Life lolz) or sniping that dude when he finally took off his damn armour. With Skyrim it was really really quick and hardly any finesse needed.

"Might as well move their entire village inside the damn cave since they're so fond of caves." I know right! There's a surprisingly high rate of kidnapping in Skyrim.
The only rushed faction questline that particularly bothered me was the Mage College (admittedly I haven't done much for the Thieves yet). Because with the DB, there isn't much competition for leader, and either you are the Listener or you're not, so it's not the same as being actively elected. And with the Companions it was a bit weird being Harbinger (considering Aela or Vilkas seem like a better choice), but she was just an adviser rather than leader. But I had to facepalm when my character who barely uses magic and was a new apprentice like yesterday is suddenly Arch-Mage. Admittedly I'm not into the whole "complete the questline and become the leader" thing anyway, but it often felt undeserved here.
And lol, I love summoning mah dear assassin friend, but only when I really need help. For a 'legendary assassin', he's really not all that stealthy. And he talks a lot in the dungeons. I'm always shushing at the TV because I think bandits will hear him.

Skyrim guild quests are rather short... I finished the Colleges of Magic in one go... It took me a week and lots of travels and a mountain of necromancer and undead corpses to do the same in Oblivion.

TheComrade315 [2011-11-27 17:51:58 +0000 UTC]
Didn't you recognize his name in the description of the 'Summon Spectral Assassin' spell? I did.
You say there aren't enough unique quests in Skyrim? Have you even done any of the Daedric quests? Vaermina? Molag Bal? I can only conclude that the reason you think there isn't much variety in quest substance is because you've never entered a drinking contest with the Daedric Prince of Debauchery and ended up tracing the steps from your binge all the way across Skyrim. The quests you mentioned above to Sovietmaster were all referencing side quests that you had to look for, so you really can't compare them to the main questline of the DB.
If you really wanted a guild with an exciting questline, you ought to have joined the Thieves Guild. Good story. Not at all like you'd expect.

I hate the UI and selected him by accident. Instead of using a shout I summoned him.
I've done all the daedric quests. Had trouble with Azura once I entered the star and got my ass handed. Thought I was unstoppable.
But I really wanted to advance in rank and not just have a few quests then blam, I'm a guild leader.
My favorite guilds were the Companions and Thieves. Although I had a nasty bug in the Thieves guild and drowned each time until the exit decided to work properly.

TheComrade315 In reply to Pomponorium [2011-12-03 20:41:33 +0000 UTC]
For that part of the Thieves Guild, I was an Argonian. I was swimming around looking for the exit for about 10 minutes when I turned around and saw the others with me, apparently just having better things to do than breathe.
Companions was indeed fun. But I just blazed through the story quests, and only ended up doing only a few side missions for them, so no repetition there. I thought that old grouch in the Star was kinda easy. But then I do have the difficulty kinda low after dieing many times by a spider early on.
Speaking of unstoppable, the exact thing you drew in your comic vs the giant happened to me, in exactly the same way. Me:"I just killed a dragon! I can take you, dumb giant common!" *charges* Giant:[smash] Me: "HOLY CRAAAAaaaaaaaaaaa.........." xD

There are about twenty significant quests in Oblivion (Which are basically generic but had sometimes special features).
In Skyrim there are 14 quests significant to the main quest - and 12 contract quests you have to preform in between those 14 quests.
I do agree it all seems..rushed - but it is more unique than the 'evil evil dark stuff' of Oblivion. For there's a schism, stuff happens and generally the DB is at its life-line.
So its give and take. I do wish there was more variety of killing though.

Pomponorium In reply to Sovietmaster [2011-11-24 23:23:12 +0000 UTC]
I liked the killing. Didn't feel like I was just beating the carpet.
I only wished they added more unique quests. Some to remember. Like the paranoid elf or some characters you can remember. The adoring fan or the lady with her fat rats in the basement. It's just that I don't feel any connection with any character from any guild. Perhaps Aela the Huntress, just a little.

Sovietmaster In reply to Pomponorium [2011-11-25 18:21:41 +0000 UTC]
Well - most characters in the DB in Skyrim are still dark but don't really 'react' with the character ( as a majority die. I did feel some pity for Astrid and Cicero and the argonian.)
Though there are some I connect to in the Stormcloaks and Greybeards - just for the others it depends.

Pomponorium In reply to Sovietmaster [2011-12-02 00:18:07 +0000 UTC]
Astrid was kind of a Dark Brotherhood assassin wannabe. I wanted to kill her the moment she imposed her authority in the guild. Too bad she was too damaged in the end.
π: 0 β©: 1
Sovietmaster In reply to Pomponorium [2011-12-02 04:35:23 +0000 UTC]
Indeed.
But I think it was intended due to the fact the new era was to bring new changes.
Such as the destruction of Morrowind at the hands of argonia, the Empire reforging at the possession of a new Emperor and dynasty (since the 3rd Era was brought by Tiber Septim).
So, likely, the Dark Brotherhood had to 'reforge' itself. But this meant abandoning the Orthodox ways, and becoming more of a petty-band of killers.
Some remain true to the old way, others don't.
I feel sorry for the last ShadowScale though.

I haven't joined the Dark Brotherhood yet, but that is what I have to deal with in the guilds I have joined. Even the College of Winterhold is a little similar in that respect.
As for being an assassin, I will be as subtle as a rocket when taking out my target. I am a warrior after all, and I use a warhammer. Taking out my target will possibly get some collateral damage involved, and I won't be stealthy at all.
