Description

It took a long time for Sassafras to realize what type of guy she liked. At first she assumed that the big, tough burly sort were the kind for her; it'd make sense since she enjoys playing rough with them! But...if that was the case, then why did none of her playmates make her heart pitter-patter? Them being big and macho made her want to beat them even more! So no. Those fellas are not good for her. What she'd like is someone sweet to talk to. Someone smart and quiet and insightful and kind. A stallion who would enjoy close contact and long peaceful grooming sessions. To completely unwind with! Someone just like...

"Buck ! Hold on man, wait up!"

Buck flinches as the rough and tumble mare gallops over to him. Oh no! What was she going to do now? She had already chased him around yesterday in a terrifying game of tag. And he politely declined a dueling invitation the day before that. Oh why won't she just leave him be to draw in the dirt? He just got the likeness of a bird right this time.

"Hello Sassafras. Can I help you?" Buck puts on his usual charming smile in hopes of remaining unscathed.

"Do you want to come to the waterfall with me? Caspian showed me the coolest secret spot. I promise not to invite anyone else!" Sassafras wags her tail and looks at him hopefully.

Buck sighs in relief. Oh good! A creek visit will have mild results. And there's plenty of sand and rocks to look at. Not like he has anything else better to do anyway...

"Okay. That sounds nice."

Sassafras beams. "It will be! There's lots of fish to chase in the shallows and a perfect deep spot for swimming! All the other guys are too crazy to enjoy the peacefulness of it. Come on!" She is so hyped to have a swimming buddy for the day. With a joyful neigh she turns heels and takes off.

Swimming?! She never mentioned swimming in the question! Buck gulps nervously, very vividly remembering his fear of drowning. But it'd be rude to back out now so he meekly follows after her.

~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Oh! This is lovely!" Buck gasps to himself at the sight before him. So much sand! So many pretty rocks. He immediately lowers his head to poke around the area in order to seek out the perfect drawing stick.
Sassafras, who is already standing knee-deep in the water, watches him with a smile. Eventually the siren call of the cool water forces her to turn away in order to splash out deeper.
They both enjoyed the area for several hours, content in their own activities. Buck doodled several fish, picked at some pebbles, and paddled a hoof in the shallow end. Sassafras has swam far too many laps, floated upside-down, and tried to catch some fish. She had almost succeeded, but squealed and dropped the fish when it slapped its tail across her face.
They somehow ended up laying across from each other; Buck on the damp sand, and Sassafras half in and half out of the water. She rests quietly for a little bit before piping up to destroy the silence.
"How come you don't want to swim with me? Am I really that scary? I promise not to dunk you."
Buck jolts out of his dozing state of mind. "Huh? It's not you at all." He isn't even sure why he decides to tell her. Maybe because despite her rough exterior, something about her just seems so genuine? That she doesn't seem interested in gossip? Either way he spills his guts.
"I'm...scared of drowning. That's why I haven't set foot in this water too much."
Sassafras tilts her head. "Oh, that's all? What a relief! I thought you hated me or something." She stands up and shakes off some grime from laying on slimy rocks. "Getting over simple fears like that is really easy. I'll help you if you'd like."
"How?" Buck stares at her curiously.
"Come on in and it'll all be made clear." Sassafras scoots back out into the water. "There's no undercurrents, don't worry. Follow me!"
Buck takes a deep breath. Should he? After all, it is something he's sort of been ashamed of for awhile now. It'd be nice if she could soothe the fear somewhat at least. Releasing the air he steps into the chilly creek water. He focuses on her pale clue coat as he steps farther and farther out. Before he knows it, water is lapping at his jawbones!
"Okay now what? I don't like this one bit!"
Sassafras doesn't answer. She simply dives underneath the water. Buck cannot easily figure out where she went off to since his head mobility is limited. He pins his ears uneasily. Where's the bottom? Why can't he see it?!
Sassafras does eventually resurface...right underneath him! He snorts and tries to balance his belly across her back. He feels like a see-saw!
It has all happened so fast. One minute he could touch the ground, and the next he couldn't. Sassafras has already ferried him out of the bottom's reach. He can tell since her body has sank lower into the water, and her nostrils are flaring at the effort of holding both of them afloat. The not knowing causes him to panic slightly.
"Sit still! You wanna deal with the deep end yourself?" She scolds him playfully. Buck stops thrashing.
"Just relax. Then tell me how you feel."
Buck tries to loosen his muscles, to let his legs drift around the mild current her churning legs are creating. Deep breaths...deep breaths...Sure enough he does start to chill out. He is obviously in no danger of sinking and he can now focus on what's going on around him. The water laps cheerfully at his back, and matched with the happy burble of waterfall it doesn't seem at all as threatening as he assumed it'd be. Sassafras' coat is warm but slightly gritty from the sand she had itched her back with earlier. The birds are chirping contentedly on the shoreline. He tastes the moist, pleasant, clean air.
"I feel...I feel good. At ease. This place is so beautiful."
"Great! Ready to start swimming?" Sassafras looks over at him. She is starting to tire somewhat. "I'll be by your shoulder the whole time. You won't go anywhere."
Buck ponders this anxiously. "Um...okay." He has decided to trust her. She's carried him this far with no tricks! And she's put up with his hooves bumping into her sides all this time.
"Alright. You're going to sink a little lower but that is normal. Just kick and you'll be fine." Sassafras is pleased with his progress. "Ready? One...two...three..." She gradually slides him off of her back on the countdown.
As soon as he couldn't feel her support anymore Buck starts paddling. The water has closed over his back and at first he starts to lose it, eyes rolling in fear. But he manages to come back together once he figures out that his head is not going under. He's doing it! He's actually swimming with no ground! He starts to laugh despite himself.
"Haha! Lookit this! I'm swimming! Actually swimming! No more of that pathetic shallow wallowing."
Sassafras, who is skimming around beside him, beams proudly. "So you are! Go go go Buckaroo! You can do it!" She nudges his cheek and starts for the shoreline.
Buck wheezes in the effort of catching up to her. His stroke style focuses mainly on keeping him afloat, not actually propelling him anywhere. He's relieved when his hooves graze the sandy bottom. From there he keeps walking, all the way up to the shore. With an exhausted grunt he flops down next to her. Only then does he notice how hard his heart is beating from the endeavor.
"I think I still don't really enjoy it that much. Next time I'll stick to the beach."
Sassafras giggles in amusement. "You did super well pretty boy. You tried it and fairly decided that it's not for you. Um...I didn't pressure you at all, did I?"
"Nope. That was all on me." Buck rolls over onto his side like a beached whale. "Thanks for bringing me here anyway. Even if it did almost trigger a heart attack!" While the feeling of swimming weightless was thrilling, deep down he still had that clawing panic. Terror of the unknown. He's fine to continue avoiding it.
"Of course! I'm glad you like it." Sassafras somehow has enough energy to roll around a bit. Her coat needs drying!
Buck is somewhat perplexed though. Why would she treat him so roughly at other times but gentle now? He needs to know. "Um...why did you bring me here? And help me? I thought I was only just a toy or something to you."
Her face twists into horrified shock. "Oh no! You're not like that at all! Pretty boy is your nickname, just like how Chicken boy is Edmund's. Do you prefer Buckaroo?"
Buck frowns. She's dodging his question! "I don't mind the nicknames. That's a thing you do for everyone. What makes you think I'm special enough to come here versus the other guys?"
"Well, the other day I asked them for...advice. On something. And they said I should act a certain way to get your attention." Sassafras is dodging hard now. The guys all said they bother the girls they like to get noticed, and she decided to try that too. "You're so cool Buck! You're really good at being creative, and you're just so nice. I know you didn't want to come here at first but you did anyway. And enjoyed yourself for my sake. So I wanted to repay you with the swimming thing. Because the truth is...I...um...you are...erm....I..."
Her face crumples up in annoyance. To express herself better she stretches out a fore-hoof and draws a lumpy shape in the sand. Buck leans forward and his eyes widen. She has drawn a very sloppy heart! For him!
"I...like you Buck." She turns away in embarrassment.
All Buck can manage to reply with is a surprised and very strangled, "Oh!"
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Aha Sassafras is into them sweet soft boys! Which is polar opposite of hers and she tends to scare them away Deep down she's a sweet horse who doesn't mind cuddling and sappy nicknames. You just have to be the right type to find it!
Buck does seem to have enough spunk to put up with her high energy levels (I think I made his personality too soft when writing this >.<). She adores his creativity in all forms, whether it be poems or drawing or crafts (I assumed he knew how to doodle in this). He's got that charming kind personality that she's admired from afar and has finally taken advice on how to do something about it! Honestly one of my favorite dynamics is tough girl x soft boi so why not try it here? If anyone tries insulting him she'd fight for his honor 10/10 >:-0
