Almandine is the fusion of Champagne Sapphire and the last remaining (at the time) of her ruby guards. the others were found and bubbled by Steven. she knew they'd turn up again. Cheeky was the head of the group, a Ruby with a love of sarcasm and insubordination and a hatred of nonsense and things not going her way. She had little tolerance for the mistakes of the other 3 rubies accompanying her. She does admire Champagne Sapphire's future ability, but will never admit this out loud. Champagne already knows. She does resent having to take orders, though. this causes her confusing emotions in regard to Champagne. Champagne is very posh, she enjoys perfection and bragging when her predictions come true. She was sent to Earth by Yellow Diamond to use her future vision to track down Steven. Her ship was crashed however. She using her future vision saw Steven arrive at the site and she and Cheeky fled. Her other Rubies were found and bubbled.

Now stranded on Earth, Champagne and Cheeky decided to focus on survival. At first they bickered constantly. However, they did start to develop feelings of affection. Ruby however seemed obsessed with finding "Rose" in order to regain favor with Yellow after their ship crash blunder. Champagne knew if Ruby went to fight alone, Steven and the Crystal gems would win. Cheeky insisted however that they could not return home without Rose or they'd be punished or even shattered for inconvenience. Champagne (who Ruby had started calling "champ") offhandedly suggested perhaps they shouldn't return and should stay together on Earth. Ruby scoffed and said the idea would make them traitors, without realizing this badly hurt Champagne until after she said it. Ruby tried to take it back, but Champagne responded with an emotional "I should have known!" and fled. Ruby now not caring if she got hurt decided to go finish tracking down Steven.

While sulking, Champagne had a vision of the crystal gems accidentally shattering Cheeky and her being too late to do anything. While in battle, sure enough, Garnet managed to pin Cheeky into a corner and was about to almost shatter her by accident in attempt to poof her, but Champagne managed to get there and push Ruby out of the way. They then fused into Almandine, while Garnet just smiled and said "boy this looks familiar.".

They immediately unfused and freaked out.

Champagne: I'm so sorry! I didn't mean to. I didn't see this! We're going to be shattered!

Cheeky: No! We're not!

Champagne: what do you mean? Of course we are! Two different gems can't fuse!

Cheeky: They can if we don't go back! *winks*

Later Garnet comes outside to see the two in the middle of the night attempting unsuccessfully to re-fuse doing things such as literally headbutting into each other. Champagne looks up upset.

Champagne: I'm supposed to know everything! Why don't I know everything?! Why am I confused?! why can't I figure this out? WHY DO YOU MAKE IT LOOK SO EASY?!

Cheeky: *Puts her arm around Champagne* So how does this fusion thing work?

Garnet: You'll never be able to do it if you try to do it like me. You need to find your own answers.

Cheeky: Oh boy that's helpful. *rolls eyes*

Champ: I think we're trying too hard. Let's take a break.

Garnet: *silent thumbs up*

after a while of dating separately they become a permafusion during the diamond days arc when they fuse to help Steven stop White Diamond.
