At birth, this pokemon has a single white tail that splits into six and gains color. It is a warm and cuddly pokemon, with an internal flame that never goes out. During the day, it releases flame from its body to cool off, and can control fire freely in the form of will-o’-wisp orbs.
Evolves Into:
Ninetales [When exposed to a Fire Stone]
Design Origins:
Vulpix is based off of a fox. Kitsune, Japanese fox spirits, are also a strong influence on this pokemon’s design, being creatures with many tails that breathe fire. The fact that kitsunes take on spirit forms after living a long time might be why Vulpix can learn some Ghost-type moves.
Name Origins:
-Vulpix is a combination of VULPES [Latin for fox] and SIX.
-Rokon is most likely a combination of ROKU [Japanese for six] and KON [the word for a grudge], KON KON [the sound that foxes make in Japanese], KONRO [the word for gas stove in Japanese], or KO, an alternative reading of KITSUNE [fox].
-Goupix is from GOUPIL [An archaic French word for fox] and SIX.
-Sixtail is from SIX an TAIL.
Vulpix’s Most Powerful Physical Attack:
FLARE BLITZ [Learned by Breeding with Growlithe, Ponyta, Rapidash, Flareon, Combusken, Blaziken, Monferno, Infernape, Tepig, Pignite, Emboar, Darumaka, OR Darmanitan if it knows this move.]
This move is a devastating fire type attack with a base power of 120, with the drawback of causing recoil damage to the user. A Cool move in Contests, this move has 15 PP.
Vulpix’s Most Powerful Special Attack:
OVERHEAT [Learned from TM50]
A powerful fire type attack, that will lower the user’s Special Attack by two stages when used. It’s base power of 130 means this move is nothing to sneeze at however, and with 5 PP it’s wise to use this move sparingly. It’s considered a Beautiful category move in Contests.
Trivia:
-Much like other Generation I pokemon, Vulpix had a prototype name prior to release. Vulpix’s name was originally listed as “Foxfire” in the beta for Pokemon Red and Pokemon Blue.
-Vulpix, Ninetales, Fennekin, Braixen, and Delphox all share the same species name, and are all called “Fox Pokemon”.
-Vulpix has the lowest base HP stat of all Fire type pokemon, and is the only pokemon with a base stat total of 299.
-Vulpix can be seen as a parrallel or counterpart to Growlithe! Both are Generation I Pokemon that evolve when exposed to Fire Stones. Vulpix is exclusive to Pokemon Green, Blue, Silver, Leafgreen, and SoulSilver and Growlithe is exclusive to Red, Blue[in Japan], Gold, FireRed, and HeartGold. Growlithe has a 75% chance of being male, while Vulpix has a 75% chance of being female. Both are in the Field Egg Group, can have Flash Fire as an ability, and are yellow when Shiny. Furthermore, both are based on animals of Japaneses folklore [the Kitsune and the Shisa] and canines.
Artist Notes:
Vulpix was one of my favorites back in Generation I, however as time went on, I found myself being much more fond of other fire types. No offense to it, but I didn’t exactly “love” training them. I don’t know why, it’s an amazing pokemon! I suppose that whenever I came across it in my games, I usually had another fire type in the team and didn’t need another. That being said, I did love drawing it when I was young, and now that I’m older that sentiment hasn’t changed. While some would classify Vulpix as a unicorn, I felt that it was better suited as an earth pony, mostly because I thought that as a fox, it wasn’t as “magical” as other pokemon out there. Not that vulpix isn’t magical or mythical in its own representational way, but because there are others that shine out as more fitting in comparison. The cutie mark of a flaming star is indicative of its beauty as well as its fire-breathing skill.
