Paradise's sole continent is dreaded for its winter months, infamous for plunging the land into complete darkness and thick layers of snow. Along the southernmost regions, however, the winter days are, though bitter, often more of a dark grey, and cloudy with thick fog. The water often ices over, but temperatures usually stay above freezing. There is a clear differentiation between these crude, liminal days and the pitch blackness of night. Algae manages to grow in small, sluggish quantities, and the relict pseudofungi thrive. For many algae-eaters, such as the three-ton mastodon shambling above, the southern regions of the continent are a refuge, though unpleasant themselves, from a winter far worse up north. Though these refuges are not entirely safe. There are others who seek to flee the snow, and they do not crave mere algae...
