Backstory:
Kuba was born to a small pride that consisted of his parents, an aunt and his littermates. He is the only surviving cub out of his siblings as they died before adulthood. He struck out on his own when he was a teen, encouraged by his father who knew Kuba would have a better chance on his own since he wouldn't have to care for the aging adults. He managed to survive on scraps until he arrived on the outskirts of a lush territory. He thought his prayers had been answered but the pride leader rejected his request to enter the lands. Isa, a lioness from the pride took pity on the starving male and would sneak food to him at the borders. Their interactions evolved into intimacy and soon they were engaged in an illicit affair. They maintained their secret for months. But it was hard to hide a pregnancy. Kuba and his mate took refuge in a system of caves and that was where their cubs were born. Three tiny cubs, a male and two females were born in the dark. Once again, Kuba thought life was looking up. But his happiness was short-lived. Kuba and Isa were ambushed at the border during a storm by the pride leader, and his mate was gravelly injured. Despite his protests, Isa begged him to leave her and rescue their cubs. Kuba left her and found their den flooding. He searched desperately for his cubs but only his son remained, holding onto the rock to keep from being swept away just as his sisters were. Kuba pulled him to safety and returned to search for his daughters. But he returned to his son alone. They fled the territory and traveled for days under the rain. Food was hard to come by, shelter was scarce and other lions would only chase the father off. As hard as Kuba tried, no amount of effort was enough. And his little Vali succumbed weeks later to disease. Kuba only survived by scavenging prey from other predators and hiding from attackers when they gave chase.
