Description
"Draw as depressing a pony as you can muster. It should be a filly, she should be alone, and her expression should be that of a person who's completely given up on everything."Wish granted.
I dunno why I still start with flat colors anymore … doing it like this is so much faster and more interesting, I think.

What's "doing it like this"? Grayscale to color? Or what.
Anyway, nice palette, and nice minimal background.

The main difference I was referring to (between request #2 and #3), is that I did not start with a hard outline and flat colors. Drawing in that way leads to certain problems for me.
I used a less rigid and meticulously made outline to start, which saves time and allows me to more easily make refinements or add highlights to the outline. I skipped the process of blocking color in, which better allows for color mixing and less flat color in the end. As a whole, I also did the whole thing more like art (just adding whatever I thought would look nice) and less like a step-by-step math problem (doing everything cleanly in a certain order).
I'm not trying to say that this drawing is really good or anything, but I think the process is way healthier and I'm sort of excited about that. I see very clear errors in my execution, yet I think what I did was faster and better than the process I've been doing.

I dig what you're saying. I think getting away from a rigid "This phase, then this phase" approach is much healthier, as you say.
