With all the reruns, even I know the Waltons. Strangely when I saw him as Jackson, he looked familiar but I couldn't place him. Didn't catch the credits at that time.
James Garner should have played the role of Jackson actually. But he had a stroke sometime later and the role went to Ralph Waite. I think Ralph was the better match.

In so far as I'm concerned, Ralph Waite was perfect as Jackson.

Yep, I like Garner but I don't think some of the more emotional scenes with Ralph Waite and Mark Harmon would have been as good if it were indeed Garner.
