Description
One of the splash pages from Habitat, my current big project, coming out in Island Magazine. Basically, it's the far corner of a star trek style civilization gone to shit, ruled by cannibals, and coming to a comic store near youRelated content

I want more of Habitat! That picture alone had me sold 😊 If you don't mind, can I ask you what is that thing I see in the ending of the Habitat story?

WELL (sorry i missed this comment) BUT it's a big sleeping posthuman god-being, re-awakened after being dormant for a good century or so!

The perspective on this structure is that .... Wow, imagine living there and seeing how the land curves upwards.

High end stuff, for real. As someone who's tried to draw this kind of ringworld-type sci-fi, I have to say its crazy difficult to get on the level you've achieved with this.

thanks man - i actually had to take quite a few unsuccessful runs at this before figuring out how to best draw it. It took thinking about the landscape as a stepped pit (and turning the drawing sideways) for me to be able to get my brain around it! (i even tried building a 3d model of this but couldnt get the right thing going in google sketchup.

I know what you mean, I definitely trip myself up sometimes from not looking at a piece from the right angles.

Do the inhabitants know they are in a bernal sphere?

Yep - the whole 'they've forgotten they are on a spaceship' is a good trope, but not one i wanted to use in this one. (i love heinlein's "universe")

How much technology do they still understand?

It's not the classic 'we've forgotten we're on a spaceship' world, but they basically only have limited domestic goods they can print off of a handful of ancient 3d printers, and whatever they can grow or recover from the ruins. Plus i imagine education has hugely declined, so they probably dont know a ton about anything too complex

This is genius, the way we're fooled into thinking its a classic O'Neil cylinder before our preconceptions are thrown right back in our face by the little band of primitives in the forest.

Thanks! It's a bernal sphere, if it were built by space aztecs with unlimited power supplies

I always like the idea of an advanced space faring culture collapsing leaving behind advanced technology though out the galaxy and the most decadent of their society becoming rulers.

I am right there with A little Urbex, a touch of RENDEZVOUS WITH RAMA, a bit of Chernobyl. (I loved the overgrown "oxygen garden" in the abandoned ship in the film SUNSHINE...)

Yeah, forget hoverboards and flying cars. Where are those giant ring-shaped space habitats I was promised in the 70's?!?!?

Right on. I wasn't crazy about the film, but at least ELYSIUM had the ring orbiter!

Kruger was awesome, tho. I'd have watched a whole movie about his character.

Sure! There's cool stuff in ELYSIUM - I thought Matt Damon did surprisingly well as a cyber-punk dock worker, and the ROBOTS were amazing!

I looooove this - it combines my interests in space habitats and abandoned cities going back to nature!
