I still think Mausinger might have some mixed ancestry.
I should buy the game, I watched a LP though.

Mixed ancestry? Between mousekind and what exactly?

Perhaps a squirrel, would explain the neck. King Leonhard is also a Lion indicating Grimalkins can be other felines, so I can see mouse kind having other rodent ancestry.

That seems doubtful. Mousekind seems pretty strictly rat/mouse. Throwing in other species of rodents kind of throws off the whole cat and mouse thing that Ding Dong Dell has going. AndΒ King Leonhard being a lion is actually a departure from the first game where the King of Ding Dong Dell was actually a house cat. It's basically a peculiar design choice that kind of complicates things. Although I can see why they did it because of lions and royalty, it just, like Mausinger, gives him a design that sets him apart from the rest of his kind.

True. Rats and Mice are also rarely differentiated in Japanese culture, with rats being called big mouse.Β
Cats do chase squirrels, but yeah, I see your point. It was mostly a silly head canon I just tossed out to explain Mausinger's unique design.
Come to think of it, I don't we ever see Mausinger's tail, do we?

I don't think Mausinger has a tail. Or Ratja for that matter. In fact there are a number of mousekind and grimalkin who don't seem to have one. So either this means that being tailless is a genetic quirk present in both mousekind and grimalkin gene pools, or this could suggest interbreeding with the humanfolk population.

That or maybe its tucked inside.
I notice a lot of the times with anthropomorphic characters in general, some anthropomorphic characters will lack tails when most other characters do or vice a versa. Additionally there will be times when a animal character with a tail will lose it for certain scenes, like when a character puts on a fancy suit their tail suddenly disappears.
Its probably both because tails are hard to keep track of from an artist perspective and its easier to forget the tail as humans don't have vestigial tails.

There isn't any particular consistency between cats and mice that have tails and cats and mice that don't. Citizen Kitty wears a skirt and her tail is visible. Citizen Muriel wears a dress and her tail isn't (nor are Persha's or Ratja's if they have one). Captain Buck and the elite guardsmen have tails poking through armour, while citizen Marlene doesn't. Citizen Moggie May's concept artwork depicts her tail going through her cape even though it makes no sense for it to do so, though without booting up the game and going to her citizen entry, I don't know if it's also the case for her character model as well.
So it seems to me that if a character has a tail, it's visible and if a tail is not visible, it means they don't have one.

The Citizens have concept artwork?

They do! The Art of Ni no Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom was an art book released by Titan Publishing last April if you're interested in getting your hands on a physical copy. It seems to be a public release of the art book that came with the King's Edition. However it is important to note that there are two versions of the KE art book depending on region. Here is the EU version. And here is the NA version.

I really like this piece. It's nice to see these two relaxing in a less public setting. The lighting really gives off a sense of tranquility here.
I think if anyone needs this downtime more it's Mausinger. I get this feeling from the credits' artwork (and a comment late in the game from Pugnacious) that he is basically a workaholic. I actually have this headcanon that those dark eyelids of his are from him being perpetually tired.

Yeah, I can see Mausinger being the type to throw himself into his work especially given what he had and still has to work towards; That being peace between mousekind and grimalkin.Β However Pugnacious' comment was said in regards to Mausinger showing no interest in Goldpaw's casino, i.e. in gambling. Like could you see Mausinger gambling lol?

I think it'd be even more hysterical if Ratja was the gambler. It'd be extremely unlikely in canon, but can you imagine? xD

LOL. Mausinger would be horrified.

If these two ever have kids (I think theyβd eventually have) I got the feeling Mausinger wouldnβt have much time to spend with them. Sadly, thatβs how things often work in royal families.

They both seem like the type to want children, but yeah. Mausinger wouldn't have much time to spend with them and it would be one of his sincerest regrets. But at least he'll have given them a better life than he and Ratja had.

Perhaps, but I got the headcannon their kid (or kids, who knows) would eventually start resenting their dad for not paying much attention, kinda like boruto and naruto.
Think heβd be in for a boy or a girl?

Aww. D: That makes sad.
At the moment I'm going forward with a son called Theodore. But I won't lie "Theo" started out as a girl who didn't yet have a name, and sometimes I find my self entertaining the idea of fraternal twins lol.

could be. I mean, mice have BIG litters.Β I'm in for twins, a boy and a girl, whose names i'm yet to decide.Β
