The only downside of the effect is that it takes away some of the mass of the horde, but I can live with that

It can to a point, yes. I think if you set the fading's opacity a little lower, you'd still see the eyes in the distance but still have the same effect. They don't have to entirely fade out to black.
But what that fading does what I feel is essential since we don't have much to go on to display depth. The fading does just that in an almost entirely black setting.

I actually intended this to have an entirely black background, but after I've finished the eyes there was just so much empty space, so I got the idea with the intimidating mountains in the background. And they definitely did the trick^^
