"They say nothing prepares you for your first battle, and that is true as it anything can be. You can train hard and brutally enough to make Cerberus looks like a blind puppy, read a library full of books on war, and talk to a whole Hive of veterans who have more battle-scars than chitin. And none of that will prepare you for the first time you step onto a real battlefield.
It also won't prepare you for your last battle, either. All the screaming I've heard, and done; all the blood I've spilled...and shed; none of it could compare to that night when the Equestrians steamrolled through our local Hive. Tanks, shells, armored ponies with blades, magic, and rifles....they just kept coming; kept...killing. I saw Changelings I'd fought alongside for years get cut apart like wet paper, and the Hive's Battle-Master was blown to mist by a lucky grenade, right in front of me. I still remember his face--he didn't even have time to look surprised, his eyes had just started to widen when the grenade went off.
We were already broken when the Battle-Master went down, but...they. Wouldn't. Stop. The damn ponies just wouldn't stop killing us!
I... I can't remember much of the fight, or when I decided to run. It was like I was sleepwalking through all the carnage--like I was just some overgrown nymph-ling who wandered onto a battlefield.
The killing just sort of...tapered off after a while. Bit by bit, the screaming slowed down.
They found me in an old hatching chamber, said I was unconscious. I didn't say a word when they slapped the shackles on my hooves and dragged me to the surface."

Yeah it was pretty awful, but this is just the background for my project, so there is going to be lots of other stuff going on in the final assembly...
