I use a photo like a reference at portraits. You can see on the reference the colors, the lights and shadows, and the proportions. It is more easy with reference.

Cool i must try that on a real portrait but it would be kind of hard on a comic pic like this

You can make in Photoshop Image> adjust> threshold on the photo. So you can see easily the light and the shadow.
