When I'm in a bad mood, I do some mean shit, but whatever. What is it really going to hurt telling this person that they should try drawing using their own hand, their own ideas, their own talent, instead of just tracing over and using someone else's?

I use them but I'm still learning shading on my tablet...so I use them as practice...

Then learn on paper. Draw what you see etc. Don't cheat yourself out of art by using poorly traced bases.
Shading on tablet =/= good art/an excuse to use bases.

Look some people like using bases because they are out there to be used! Why put them up when people like you pick on someones bases or in matter in fact everyone bases! I mean some of us like using bases to help design OC's or in my case, help me get the placement of shading and highlights right. Some even do it for fun! So stop being such a snob about how "poorly" drawn bases are when they are fine! Hope you are clear on that.

You shouldn't use bases if you are an aspiring artist, or any at all if you are an artist, because no it does not teach you placement etc especially if the anatomy is wonky, like in most bases.
It does not teach you anything.
Drawing on your own, not just slapping on clothes and hair teaches you.
Learning what you're doing wrong with your own art teaches you.
Bases really are just unacceptable.
THe fact that they are stolen images, and then traced is even worse.

I agree about the whole tracing over images to create 'bases' is pretty stupid and, well, art theft. I really don't mind if the artist actually drew the image themself and it's quality. I actually learned anatomy from using bases though, the good ones that look at least half decent though.
It bothers me though when people just scribble some lines on it and say it's "hair", then make the queen of Mary Sues. But I don't mind if they put effort into it.

Most credit the original picture and some just want to have some fun with the bases just to try something new. Many of us are digital artists without a fancy tablet or program like GIMP to draw with. Some of use don't even have working scanners or don't have them at all! If you think any of these or anyone's base is distasteful, keep your rude and unneeded comments to yourself for everyone like using bases!

I used to draw with a shitty mouse for like 3 years. I will not stand by for the "i don't have a tablet" excuse because that is hardly one.
If you care about art at all then you wouldn't use bases, and you would use whatever medium you have available.
Even if you don't have a scanner, grab a camera or something and take a picture of that.
Or even if you don't have a camera, just draw for yourself

I think you fail to realize that there are many types of art and one of the most popular is base art! People do it for fun, not to do it just for art. I am a base user and if you keep calling me and all these different people distasteful, boy you don't even belong here on DeviantART! Bases are one of the most Favorited art to do and I want you to keep your bitchy comments about other peoples bases to yourself. Why post them anyway when you hate bases that much? Think about that.

I don't care if it's the most favorited, just because it was ripped off of someone else's art, it's the original artist's art that people like. 95% of all of the base edits that I've seen are complete crap.
The people who favorite and comment are mostly like other base users.
Artists who take the time to learn the anatomy, how to draw folds, shading, on their own art and terms would not be like "WOW GOOD JOB"
I will say what I like about bases, and you have the choice to ignore it or get mad about it. Try thinking about that.

What about the artist did an original base and has the permission to use? I know a few who do the bases (not tracing actual drawing the base). I agree one ought to learn from paper and pencil ( as u can see from my works i hardly use bases) and the few i do use is merely for fun but i also agree with you, i hate bases from other artworks only original bases; the only time i will use one is when im just bored or (again) for the fun/hell of it.
but anyways i don't want to make a huge discussion over it because in all honesty i don't care, i just commented on it with my previous reply as an example of things we did do once in our lives.

I've never seen the case of an original base, and that's why I act this way towards all bases.
But yes I'm perfectly okay if you decide to draw your own base. As long as it isn't tracing, there is literally no problem.

the one i used recently is an original base and the artist has made originals as well. in a way these kinds of things help others who want to start "way easy" on a possible video game character or maybe an 8-bit style of art until they manage to find a common way from their experience to go for their own. trial and error type of scenario if i may say but

You really should be learning how to draw anatomy etc from life. By observing real people.
Not be looking at a picture, which most of them are incorrect, and thinking "oh that's how it goes."
