Description Previous design here! Onioki

Felt like there was a little too much brown on his previous design and still wanted that brown trench coat aesthetic while adding more visual interest. Also wanted to make his gooey aspect more disturbing and uncanny? Hoping I achieved that!

At the moment he has no proper backstory and is more just an artistic representation of myself. I will eventually be introducing other characters in the "world" he exists in, but really he's more just the face of my page, you know?

Design History
Onioki has been a part of my artwork in one form or another for over a decade now, and I want to take a moment to celebrate it with a little backtrack through just a segment of his rich history through my DeviantArt submissions!

  • OC- Onioki
2017: An earlier version of Onioki, but still technically modern compared to his earliest iterations! From the earlier days of my DeviantArt page when Pokemon Art Academy for the Nintendo 3DS was my best option for artwork...
  • OC- Akuoki
2017: The earliest appearance of Onioki's body horror elements. Previously, this entity was a different character entirely but was later combined with Onioki when I scrapped the story idea.
  • Then to now-Onioki
2018: A comparison between Onioki in 2017, and his earliest self from 2009. This original odd-looking character was named "Spike King" and ended up inspiring some of Onioki's body horror elements down the line. I actually missed the unique look of the original "Spike King" and this drawing inspired me to branch off the original Spike King into my character Doro years later. My first DeviantArt account, ChibbiSpikeKing, was actually named after this character. Unfortunately, said DeviantArt account has been long since deactivated.
It was also one of the earliest drawings on my DeviantArt that was drawn with an actual art tablet as opposed to a handheld game console.

  • Onioki- Experimentation
2020: An experimental drawing of Onioki using Autodesk Sketchbook on my old Surface Pro. I actually still have a slight soft spot for this drawing...
  • Is It Worth It ?
2020: More of a vent illustration in concept; the imposing red door standing as a symbol of addiction. This red door is actually a reoccurring theme of his character, now, and he can appear from said doors at random to 'teleport' from place to place.
  • Onioki
2021: Onioki's first fullbody reference since 2017! It was one of the earliest drawings I did on my XP Pen Innovator 16 (an art tablet I was very excited about but have... now had many problems with...). I wouldn't stylize it the same today but do have an appreciation for the style of the drawing and remember spending quite a long time on it. The texture of his tentacle-like arms was actually inspired by a wet salamander. My major complaint about this design was that it was just too... brown... and didn't really seem to stand out in the pool of 'tired-eyed-trenchcoat-wearing-white-men'.

The drawing above was illustrated with Autodesk Sketchbook on my iPad I got for Christmas. I prefer Ibis Paint or Procreate for the iPad, but Autodesk Sketchbook wasn't half bad! (if not a little confusing...? I found it weirdly difficult to crop the image...)
