FINALLY DONE! Sheeeeeeesh, it took forever! This is my entry into 's spring contest (it can be found here ) which I think I finished in time but I'm not sure. I worked really hard on it.The characters I used here are Hina, Tenyu and Fei. And the concept... well Hina loves spring. For two big reasons... actually I'm lucky because spring is relevant to Hina so I was always going to do her for this contest. To her, spring is a time where you can try again. Because it's the beginning of a new year you can mend what you broke and begin on a new and better foot. In a way, me putting Tenyu and Fei in the background is saying that considering she doesn't really get along with them but after a while she feels differently so when spring comes along she can mend what she ruined. It's also a time when flowers bloom and being an herbalist, she adores this time. Even the apples in her basket kinda have meaning... because her hair is apple-red and she's always hated that... but she does get used to it. And she likes apples - that too.xD
I really wanted to get across the pretty nature sort of vibe so I tried a lot of things. I worked rea-lly hard.xD Like on the basket. I had no idea how to do the basket weave but I attempted it too.
I think I did great on the shading though - especially on Tenyu's robe! The anatomy's okay... I guess... her hand throws me off. Could be better. And Fei~ well I just enjoy drawing him anyway because he's cute. Out of all them though Tenyu turned out the best I think. Somehow he just looks really... pretty and cool... xD

Hello, I am from VA's Breakout critic team.
And I will be giving you your requested critique ♥
First off, I would like to say how wonderful the composition is! The way you have arranged the picture is actually incredibly effective; having allowed us to look at both the characters and the scenery. And it makes the picture look all the more effective.
One issue, however, would be the poses & stances of the characters. Fei's stance seems slightly unnatural. Fei's pose is quite common in various anime & manga, however in the background, I noticed how his body tilts unnaturally, and how his hands and arms are in an awkward position, considering his legs aren't bent at all. His body looks stiff because of the unbent knees, and because of that, you'll need to find a way to make his posture look more natural ~
Overall, your anatomy looks good ♥ Limbs are in proportion to the body, and both Tenyu and Hina look natural. One issue would be Hina's cheek though. It rounds too much and makes her face look uneven.
Another thing would be Hina's left eye. It is a lot smaller than her right eye.
I assume you drew this having considered perspective, so I know you're aware of things like the difference in size when considering distance. However, the only thing I can suggest to you is that you use references to other images so that you know when and where this rule applies. Sometimes it may even look natural if they were both the same size! You should just test it out as a draft first before coloring it.
Coloring looks fine, and you get the general idea of where folds go, so I won't go into that much. Something I do suggest though, is that you try using the paintbrush tool and try not to use the airbrushing tools too much. Airbrushing looks good, but overuse of it can lead to a more 3D-like effect. And that can look strange with your style of line-art :)
Overall, I will give this a rating of 4/5.
1 for composition, 1 for folds, 1 1/2 for anatomy, and 1/2 for coloring ♥

Hahaha, now that I look back on it, you're definitely right and I think the left eye and cheek make Hina look very strange. I probably should've edited it at the time.
And the perspective is a bit off, I think... but I only considered it basically so I probably wasn't thinking straight. My own fault really.
I didn't pick up on the airbrushing sort of style with the lineart but the more I look at it, the more you're right!

Oh, an extra tip about airbrushing: When drawing manga, using the airbrush tool with grey-scale shading can look really effective. Since you usually use only 3 different black/grey tones when shading.
When it comes to coloring with different colors, however, that's when you have to make sure you limit your airbrushing and use more focused brushes :D

Oho, that's quite clever! One way I used to do it was I'd cell-shade first and then I'd kind of airbrush over it for a texture-y kind of feel, I guess. Now that you say that with the greyscale... it does make sense and I bet it'd look cool too!
