Description
So, I’m currently working on this story on fanfiction dot net. It’s a crossover between “The Hunger Games” and “My Big Big Friend,” but it (at least for now) technically appears in the Hunger Games story category because, on that website, there isn’t a category for “My Big Big Friend” yet.I know that these two particular series have quite a few differences, but I have to admit…they actually really work well together. The story is basically a rewrite of the Hunger Games series, beginning the night before the 74th Games are to be held. However, when Katniss Everdeen’s bubbly escort, Effie Trinket, realizes she has grown surprisingly fond of both of her newest tributes and wishes she could get away from the sadness and conflicted emotions she now feels (and tries her best to keep hidden from everyone around her), she winds up having her wish granted in a very unexpected way. Shortly after making her wish, Effie switches bodies with Nessa from “My Big Big Friend,” who made a similar wish to hers on the same night after being forced to choose her bossy best friend Lili over the rest of her friends one too many times.
Due to her oblivion of the violence and injustices in Panem, Nessa ends up accidentally replacing Clove, one of the Career tributes, at the last minute and, as a result, is launched into the Hunger Games arena. Then, with some unexpected help from Peeta Mellark and some of the other tributes, she manages to avoid getting harmed by the remaining Careers and the Game Makers’ traps, without ever even finding out what “getting eliminated from the Games” really means. She does, however, learn that many of the tributes she’s with do not want to be in the arena, and after miraculously gaining information about the arena’s security system from tribute Finch McLight (aka Foxface), Nessa manages to round up all the remaining tributes (except Cato, Glimmer, and Marvel), and despite trust problems along with much scarier obstacles, she and her unlikely teammates manage to crash the corpse-collecting hovercraft, hijack it, and use it to break out of the arena.
Effie, meanwhile, becomes determined to return to Panem so she can increase Katniss and Peeta’s chances of winning the Games, and teams up with many allies of her own including Bongo and Golias in order to do so. But many obstacles including Effie’s struggles to operate Nessa’s body (and magical scenery-changing powers) and Golias’s inexperience with survival situations constantly get in the way, inadvertently giving Nessa all the time she needs to get herself and the tributes out of the arena. As the story unfolds, Effie must face the difficult task of choosing whose side she’s truly on, while Nessa comes to realize that Lili hasn’t been treating her the right way and gradually discovers what being a best friend really means. However, will Lili ever truly learn the error of her ways? And do Golias and Bongo have a few things of their own to learn about how best friends function? A suspenseful tale featuring several journeys of self discovery all carefully rolled into one is what will be in store for you if you feel up for checking out my fanfic, “The Biggest Big, Big, Big, Day In The World.”
Now, the reason why I made this drawing is because despite five of the tributes Nessa broke out playing major (or major minor) roles in the fanfic, only three of those tributes were actually featured on the cover of the story (Thresh, Rue, and Foxface). They are situated at the top/middle of the cover with Nessa, and the main villain of the story: Clove, who eventually crosses paths with the arena evacuees and seemingly wants to help them, but is actually planning to sabotage them, mainly out of payback for being robbed of a chance to participate in the Hunger Games. Effie, Golias, and Bongo are featured on the cover as well, along with Lili and her friends Yuri and Matt. There are two more tributes who play large roles in the fanfic too though, so I drew a picture of them both in their honor.
The person on the left is the male tribute from District 3, or, as I decided to name him in the story, Geolo Keyship. Like the other residents of his district, he is very intelligent and an expert on technology, qualities that resulted in him becoming the third tribute to be recruited by Nessa. Despite his strengths being strongly acknowledged by the Career pack and Nessa’s team though, Geolo doesn’t think these qualities make him stand out because of how common they are amongst District 3 residents and sees himself as weak due to his lack of physical strength, struggles with using most combat weapons, and his pyrophobia. As a result, by the time he met Nessa, he had developed a strong and obvious crisis of self confidence, along with a tendency to feel overpowered by the more muscular and courageous Career pack (the latter of which allowed Glimmer to cause animosity between him and his district partner, which only worsened his mental pain).
Throughout the remainder of his time in the arena, Geolo took advantage of the fact that the Careers recruited him before Nessa’s team did, and used the Cornucopia land mines to not only create a security system for the Careers’ food stash, but also provide the material needed to crash the corpse-collecting hovercraft. He also told Katniss and Peeta about Nessa’s true intentions when she and the other members of her team couldn’t due to the intervention of the Careers, supported them and Thresh as best as he could when they fended off the Peacekeepers in the crashed hovercraft, and used his tech skills to fix the hovercraft after its original occupants were killed. Geolo was also the one who drove the hovercraft out of the arena and operated its explosives and retractable ladder whenever necessary, and he informed the rest of the team whenever he saw something bad or unusual happen outside the vehicle. When his team was forced to include Clove in their journey while they were escaping the Capitol, her presence immensely spooked him, but he pushed through nonetheless and was able to get himself and most of his allies out of the dreadful city. He and his allies are now planning to pick up the majority of their loved ones before they leave Panem altogether, with his mother, the only family he has, being among their intended targets.
However despite his strengths being the main reason why he and the rest of Nessa’s team were able to successfully escape the arena, and despite many of his teammates vocally seeing potential in him, Geolo still finds himself affected by his lack of confidence, which may or may not put himself and the other heroes in danger. That depends on how the story (which is still in progress as I’m writing this) plays out. What I can tell you though, is that Geolo’s role in the story is a big one, and it’ll be interesting to see what happens with him next.
Fun fact: Geolo’s name is based on the word “geolocation.”
The second person in this drawing is another member of Nessa’s team: the female tribute of District 8, or as I decided to call her, Sonia Woolweave. Being from that district, she quickly proved herself to be exceptionally crafty when it came to sewing, to the point where she was able to make a bandage out of a few twigs, many leaves, and some string—something that, despite her not being able to supply any healing cream, was able to help the team after Foxface badly scraped her leg (due to Nessa accidentally causing her to fall down a ditch; this was how she ended up on the team despite her antisocial personality). Sonia was also able to use her skills to create flasks made out of twigs so they could store drinking water more easily, allowing herself and her teammates to survive without having to worry about dehydration.
Despite being a helpful person to have on the team, Sonia didn’t have it much easier than Geolo did. She was at odds with Foxface for a while due to the latter referring to her as idiotic shortly after she joined the group (she and Nessa witnessed her campfire-lighting mistake on Night 1 and first met her by barely managing to rescue her from the Careers), and like Geolo, she didn’t have physical strengths as an advantage. Unlike Geolo, however, Sonia is never one to let self confidence get the best of her, and will not back down when someone she cares about is in danger or even when she’s trying to persuade others that she isn’t the weakling people may think she is. She does tend to get scared easily when the Careers are after her, and in one scene it was shown that she could never physically harm anyone without deeply struggling to do it because of empathy; which is even the case if her victim previously tried to kill her. But despite this, along with not being quite as experienced with survival as most of her allies, Sonia is confident, brave, sensitive, faithful, and always willing to take the opportunity when offered a chance to rebel against the Capitol.
During her time with Nessa’s team, Sonia has mentioned that her uncle was once part of a rebellion himself, but wasn’t able to make it to freedom and has since then become an Avox. She has also been shown to deeply admire Geolo and fellow ally Rue, to the point where she hugged the latter after being rescued from Marvel by her despite the two of them not having formally met by then. Of all his allies, once she got to know him and realized he wasn’t really happy with being the Careers’ newest teammate, Sonia was there for Geolo the most when it came to comforting him and helping him through his confidence troubles, even hugging him upon reuniting with him after a large amount of cannons went off during a time when the two of them were separated. She was worried about him even during his absence, causing Rue to briefly believe she had a crush on him until she playfully denied that statement.
Sonia’s sensitive and defensive side kicked in a few times after the arena breakout as well; when Marvel and Glimmer prevented Peeta from being able to leave with them at the last minute, she was among the many allies of his who was visibly upset about it due to him being well-liked by her, and she even called Glimmer “Flimsy Glimsy” while expressing her feelings about the situation. Then, after Matt, Yuri, and Lili unexpectedly arrived in the Capitol and their rocket ship accidentally separated her from the rest of Nessa’s team, Sonia witnessed Lili causing an argument against her friends with her selfishness, and this along with a few things Nessa said back in the arena made her correctly realize that Lili has been making Nessa’s home life harder for her. Sonia then stood up for her team leader by defensively trying to make Lili and the others stop arguing and start considering Nessa’s perspective, but was unable to get very far into her speech because at that moment, a troop of Peacekeepers caught up to the rocket and knocked her out with a tranquilizer dart.
Sonia was then successfully captured by the cruel soldiers, and due to Geolo’s knowledge of the Peacekeepers’ tendency to hide liquid tracking devices in their tranquilizer darts’ serums, her teammates were unable to retrieve her. However, since her departure, many of Sonia’s teammates have been shown mourning her absence, with Geolo even getting emotional about it several times due to the friendship the two of them had formed. She has not been seen in the story since, but she continues to be remembered by her allies even now, and they are currently planning to recover her loved ones from District 8 before leaving Panem despite her absence. There is even a chance that Sonia may be rescued, since Effie’s team is now caught up with what the former’s team is trying to do and are now planning to sneak into the Capitol and find a way to save not just her, but also Katniss, Peeta, and four other rebels that were captured during the escape from the city. But will that plan succeed? Only time will tell.
Well, that’s basically everything I’ve got to say. For more information on “The Biggest Big, Big, Big Day In The World,” I’d suggest locating the story itself and reading it; I know I probably gave you a lot of information already, but trust me, you do not know the whole story yet. Please feel free to comment, and I hope you have a nice day!
