Well the bats are probably just bats disturbed by the noise; try talking to the Cyclops, he's probably quite nice. Is it Maces or swords for zombies? Should be an easy kill either way...
If you go the Cyclops on your side you'd have found out the flying thing is his pet and very partial to tickles under the jaw...
Course if you charged in sword out then ya dead....
