Description So much work, so little time. That is to say, I put a lot of work into this, yet it only lasts a couple of minutes.

If you're unfamiliar with the exploits of Spoony McSpoon (or even if you are) you can find his debut here: [link]
I implore you to go and watch it, even if you've already seen it. It's very short and it offers a direct comparison to this one, my second ever Flash cartoon which of course is much better.

So I figured out how to ramp up the graphical quality and learned some new techniques with the program (I think.) The voice I think could stand to be better, I'll be sure to actually write out a script next time instead of corpsing like an idiot. Also you'll notice he has no arms. This was never intentional, but I figured that the hands were was more important so I was going to fit the arms in later and it seems the animation method I had intended to use looked like garbage, so I used the backup plan, which also looked like garbage then I decided that badly animated arms would look much worse than no arms at all.

Let us not forget the sterling work of who provided me with the soundtrack. Everyone loved the credits tune in the last cartoon, which was just Tracker messing around with his new multi-layered recording program but I knew as soon as he said he wasn't going to save it that I needed to use it somewhere.
So this time around I said to him:
"You need to remix it."
"Like this?"
"No, more like this."
"I can totally do that, but I'll substitute your suggested key change here for this awesome middle section. You'll know it when you hear it.

Also I wanted to make a fancy preloader but the world does not wish to co-operate. In about twenty tutorials not one of them told me how to make JUST a loading bar, but always a bar with a percentage or a "bytes loaded" and I didn't want that. Unfortunately my lack of script knowledge meant I couldn't remove the parts I didn't need because I don't know what it all meant! Then I just stole the script from the last cartoon.

And I think that's it. With lots of Spoony related media already in Flash, I can potentially make more a lot quicker now, but for the time being I have other cartoon ideas that need attention so enjoy Mr. McSpoon as he is for now.

Great job on this. Not many people can pull off such an expressive character their first or second time using flash. The fact that he is so simple makes it even more of a delight. The detailed hand movements are ace and just your attention to small details is what makes this flash stand out to me. The voice acting is also quite well done. Much clearer then last time. Out of curiosity, did you use a different recording program? Anyways, great job.

Why thankyou very much, I am grateful for such a detailed comment!

Actually yes the first was recorded with my PC mic and this one was done with my musical friend's fancy equipment with a real microphone so that would expain the quality.

That would do it. Musicians have to have good equipment. You're pretty lucky to know someone in the field.
You're very welcome. Long comments are always a joy to get.

This was amazing. I like him without any arms at all. It makes the cartoon quality more accentuated. This was performed excellently! Keep up the good work!

This wondrous and fantabulous animation makes me think that world peace is possible.

Wait...no it doesn't.

But it does make me laugh. I share the same style of humor, so I can relate. And best of all, your dialog is clear and confident, and your character very well developed. Which, considering he's a cookery spoon, is remarkable. He's up there with the likes of Marlin Brando and Gandalf. Only less hobbit.

They say the English and Australians share a similar sense of humour in general, perhaps due to our sordid past and so on.

But thankyou, he's nominated for an Oscar next year.

WAIT A SECOND!!

I've seen this about 10 times already but I just noticed!
Are those bacon strips on the curtains?

(btw my favorite part is when the oven explodes from the inside. Great animation on the door sucking in before it bursts, and I love the muffled explosion sound effect!)

That is indeed bacon on the curtains, they were there on the original cartoon too and I felt I had to use them again.

Even funnier than the first! Though I think you're slipping. Spoony sounded more authentically New York in the first cartoon. You can almost hear the British accent in this one! Not like it makes a difference or anything.

On another note, I really wish I knew how to use Flash

professorfandango In reply to TheMysteriousDrX [2006-12-05 18:44:30 +0000 UTC]

TheMysteriousDrX In reply to professorfandango [2006-12-06 14:12:48 +0000 UTC]

True, but the accent sure sounded like it. Maybe he's a New Yorker spoon trying to seem more cultured by adopting a British accent?

professorfandango In reply to TheMysteriousDrX [2006-12-05 18:44:06 +0000 UTC]

Really? I shall take note. I think attempting to make the voice more gravelly did it. This was more my "Doggy Daddy" voice.

Husky-Washu [2006-12-03 03:39:49 +0000 UTC]

Only looking at the bowl I definitely thought the blender was a toilet at first. Oh! I like the curtains too. And Spoony's hat..how it just floats there on occasion. The cartoon elements - mass mounts of grenades falling into a little pie tin, gotta love those.

Wow, this is a huge improvement over the original. You can really tell you got a firm handle on the animation process and all; that always seems to be the case since the first time around you're just learning the ropes and after that you can only improve. I thought the animation was really in synch with the music, like how the text lined up with the cymbals at "THE END"; that really makes it groove. Overall it -looks- nice and sounds great too - I did like this Spoony's voice better. Sweet job, can't wait for the next installment.

That, my sir, is really impressive. Bright colors, smooth animation, good voice and sound effects and music... the storyline is funny, without being too predictable. I especially laughed at the "write this down this is important" part. And the scribbled in drawings on the recipe on lined paper at the end.
You've turned out a fine finished product. Good job!

Neat... awesome... hilarious.

It's really well drawn and animated, the voice acting deserves some applause, and the storyline, despite being a bit too short, is enough to make me giggle.

Thanks for taking a look. I agree it is short compared to other cartoons you'll find on the 'net, but it's much longer than my first attempt, so I'm getting there little by little...

TheBourgyman [2006-11-30 05:59:14 +0000 UTC]

Haha, very funny gags and vibrant animation, though the fact the spoon was armless left the gestating a bit emptier than in the previous cartoon. But don't worry, after a short while, this feeling fades away. I really like the timing in here, how the actions are going through at a fast but reasonnable pace. The sound effects were really neat as well, though the explosion and the hammer-pounding FXs used in midway really sounded hard on my subwoofer (though it gave to the action much impact, so you don't lose any points here).

It was really enjoyable in general, it made me go to see the first cartoon and then watch this one two times more. I really hope you will come up with another nice cartoon soon, for this one is gold and really shows your potential. You get the thumbs up of approval, my friend!

Keep it up!

professorfandango In reply to TheBourgyman [2006-11-30 17:45:29 +0000 UTC]

Ah, a detailed and well thought out comment!
Many thanks, and sorry about the sounds, I had to reduce the volume of most of them to begin with.

I plan to try my hand at some frame-by-frame work next, though without a tablet it won't be easy, I'm not the best of mouse artists. But what is ambition without the challenges?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TheBourgyman In reply to professorfandango [2006-11-30 23:19:29 +0000 UTC]

You can still do it traditionally on paper... and hope your scanner will cooperate when comes time to bring the whole thing on the computer. But the process is waaay longer and a bit complexier. So if you want challenge, I think you have it! Don't hesitate to ask if you have questions about computer-assisted traditional animation (whoa, it sounded like an oxymoron!), I'll be glad to help.
