Originally drawn as an identification portrait in the OMNIDEX, the predecessor to Fiktionary Dot Com.The Spathi are the cowards of the Star Control universe. On the left side of this picture, in the shadows, you can see the looming faces of their "allies" in the Ur-Quan Hierarchy; on the right, you see their "enemies", the Alliance of Free Stars. I have always felt that the Spathi are both unwanted by and untrusting of both sides, and would much prefer to just be left alone forever.
The wiggly line on the stomach that makes it look like the spathi is making a 8S face (or rather OS face) is either just a natural pectoral armor plate or is actually the Spathi's never-before-seen mouth. I observed the detail on one of the original artworks found in the first game's instruction manual.

The Spathi has a very "wobbly" appearance, suiting its nature. The arms, usually encased in a rather robotic/crustacean-looking device, are nude, and the character is shriveling up as though to make himself a smaller target. I especially like the choice you made in making the eyes in the background only a little lighter than black, as though to emphasize the vague-yet-omnipresent dangers conjured up by their species-wide paranoia.

I think you see a VUX eye. There aren't any races in that picture that debuted in Star Control II.

Had to fave it. A game in my top... 3 or 4 of all time, and one of my favourite races, done perfectly, I just had to.
Looking again, all else I can identify is Umgah and Mmrnmhrm eyes. Oh well.
