I wasn’t going to reveal this until I had a proper comic out, but that ain’t happening any time soon, so...
Maggie’s powers depend on an inner reserve of magic. Any magic act she performs depletes this reserve, and while it does naturally charge back up again, this takes time. More spectacular feats require a correspondingly greater amount of magic, and if she hits her upper limit too soon, she automatically reverts back into her normal, non powered self, and will remain so until her magic charges back up to proper levels. To counter this, she has to train to increase her power capacity and skill.
