Description "Hop Grasshopper!"
by Robert Brown

So it is done
The grasshopper is turned
I did not think that
She would have the
Will to defy me so
Have I misjudged her
So completely?

I am rather surprised by
This turn of events
I know she believed me
When I said that
Doing so would
Consign us all to
The Grave

Is that her choice then?
Is the prospect of
A life with me such
Anathema
That she would choose to
Kill us all?
What kind of monster am I?

Ah!  But the Puzzle Master
Has yet one more trick up my sleeves
By now they have noticed
That the promised explosion
Has not happened
And my African Forest
Has yielded up its victims

But have they found
That my door has been sealed?
That a special escape has opened
Leading back to the
Rue Scribe
And freeing them all
From a sure Death?

It is not in my nature to lie
But I fear I have
Stretched the truth a little
You see the grasshopper will hop
But not for everyone
I am not so monstrous
To take so many lives

The grasshopper will take
Only one life this night
The life that is of the
Least consequence
Turning these caverns
Into my own personal tomb
Forever

I hear it beginning
They must have left my domain
And found the way back blocked to them
I wonder if it has
Occurred to them that
This will be my final
Gift to them all

So Hop Grasshopper!
Destroy all that I have created!
Like the great King Ozymandias
Let nothing beside remain
Hop Jolly High!
Fulfill your purpose
And end my suffering

Oh my gosh! I love this! I read the book, but never really thought about the grasshopper much after it.
But this is genius. Thank you for this piece!

Thank you. It all came about by just asking myself one day that if his love for Christine was true, how could he kill her if she turned the grasshopper? He couldn't, but he also could not live with an absolute reejction of him that the grasshopper represented. At least, that's how I see him.

And that is what made him such a lovely character. His maddening passion versus his cold intellect... and versus the world itself, really.

Would Eirk have done such a thing....or is this from the perspective of a different phantom....?

I see Erik capable of this. He's never so transparent as to blow everyone up and say he's going to do it. He's the PuzzleMaster! The Lover of Trapdoors! He always has something hidden. So yes, I see Erik as capable of this.

Whether he would or not is another matter. Perhaps that is the domain of a different Phantom.
