This is actually backstory. Jakotsu meets Suikotsu in a mental institution. Suikotsu is in there being treated for his Multiple Personality disorder which when he tried to save Kohaku on the space station (Refer to Chapter 13). There was an explosion that knocked both Sui and Kohaku out. When Sui awoke, the Zailuku (the alien race that the homoyoukai are at war with) are coming upon him. Sui looked over at kohaku and thought the child was dead. The Zailuku made to kill Sui and it was then he snapped and single handly slaughtered 20 Zailuku soldiers. His actions became legendary throughout the homoyoukai army as a potential each soldier to live up to. What the legend left out was Suikotsu was soon after thrown into a mental intitution because he could not control his killer side.

Jak was thrown in there because they thought his cross-dressing thing was a result of war trauma. Though the Shichinintai were still mercenaries, during the Andromeda Wars they were under more United Systems control than usual. Jakotsu assured the doctors that he was like this before entering the war, but the doctors kept him in the institution because they quickly discovered he had some really bad PTSD, not just from the war, but other things as well.

In this world the markings on Jak and Sui's faces are tattoos. Jak got his when the Shichinintai became official, the green markings on the sides of Sui's face are tattoo's marking the unit in the arm he was in, he gets the forehead markings after he joins the Shichinintai.
