I use textures and a lot of digital paint, In this case a Rhino skin texture. In the last couple of years I noticed concept artist incorporating textures into their work, I wanted to know what they were using as far as techniques. So I my dad introduced me to this artist whom worked on AVATAR and he explained to me how he used textures and so I started experimenting with it and now I use textures because now its used with the addition of digital paint. If 3D artist can do it why not 2D artists? Right? I think it really cool to be able to manipulate materials anyway you want and get results that you want.

Thank you, very much! I use a lot of textures which I started using not long ago. But As I see what goes on in the entertainment industry, concept artist are more and more using textures and I think it looks great when they incorporate textures into their work. So for this image I went with a Rhino skin textures(cgtextures.com) and a lot of digital paint.

Ya, I started using textures to complete my work. In addition I still have to do a lot of digital painting to try and make the textures look more natural, I was inspired by an artist I know whom worked on AVATAR and artist he knows, they pretty much use texture in their work!

Amen. The rules where clear as water. You have to paint it all for yourself. Or use a premade texture of your own creation or as turtlelackie says... a texture obtained by you in real life, and not internet, because is 3dh people stock, and is not allowed. XD

Gotcha. You may want to try warping your textures a bit more to fit your form. Also, try to mention when you use photo textures because other stuff in the Paintings and Airbrushing category is usually not phototextured. So it's just sort of misleading.

prolificlifeforms In reply to SkarValidus [2011-05-19 18:11:32 +0000 UTC]
Yes, I use all the standard forms of tools (warping, Distort, liquify etc.) Funny thing is, I did this piece in a about a hour, it was sort of a late night exercise. Plus I try to pick a category closest to what the image is because it it so general when submitting art work, I don't just randomly pick stuff. Any way, Thanks for your comment.

I never tried gimp. I use to use a program called Photostudio, It was cool in getting started with digital work, but once I tried Photoshop I was hooked! Keep trying, sooner or later you will get the hang of it. Good luck!

pixelizedfate In reply to FireGemini [2011-05-19 02:55:31 +0000 UTC]
If you use GIMP, you should save the pattern file as a .pat file in the GIMP patterns folder, which you can find in the GIMP folder in your C:\Program Files
Usually, the GIMP patterns folder address is this:
C:\Program Files\GIMP-2.0\share\gimp\2.0\patterns
If your GIMP is open when you download a pattern, you have to restart it.

No problem.
Oh, and by the way, if ever you download a .jpg or .png file as a pattern, you can open it in GIMP, and save it as a .pat file in the GIMP patterns folder. Then restart GIMP. Pretty taxing isn't it. -.-"
