We're doing these in my Honors English I class to improve on our writing styles in our narrative essays. They're great help, really.
Exersize 1: Describing Sound
Head over to your local library, or quiet corner cafe and get comfortable with your notebook and pen at hand. For a minute, just listen to the noises around you. You can choose to make a list of these noises as you hear them, or to just start describing nearly everything you hear in vivid detail. No cliches aloud!
Exersize 2: Being Specific ABout Feeling
For a good minute, pretend your rapidly tying in the air (Spirit fingers basically) and remember the feeling you get when it starts to hurt. In great detail, being as specific with the body part as possible, describe what you felt in your hands. Natural physical reactions that specially relate to a certain part of the body make the reader really feel an emotion or action. For a good example of this type of writing, read James Agee's "A Death In the Family."

Oh yeah! After I did a few of these, I was back on top of my novel writing and such. They're great for those days when you really can't think of anything!
