I have a tablet too, but my hair doesn't look as good. What brush do you use? Or do you just do it one strand at a time?Β

Um, I use the pen with "stringy" settings in paint tool sai, then I airbrush som light and shadows then some small details. Can't really explain it better than that. xD

My main problem is that half the picture is her face, and only maybe a third is actually her and her costume/weapon, and even then, it seems a tad blurry/unfocused. Just my two bits, though.

The problem is that her costume, the 'new' Lightning, the design thing that the contest is supposed to be centered around, is really small. Her freaking face takes up the entire left half of the picture, and the 'new' Lightning costume is really small compared to the friggin face. The priorities in the picture are messed up.

I use small, easy words then. Face is big and distracting. Costume should be big or important part, but is not because of how small it is.
That is, literally, about as simple as I can make it.

Face is wonderful!!! What are you talking about!? I like how its layed out wouldn't like it any other way in fact it is close to Β how i did mine. maybe you have different tastes in art.

... It's not that the face is done poorly or anything. It's just NOT THE POINT OF THE CONTEST. You're missing the forest for the trees. The contest is to redesign/make a new design for Lightning. Not just make Lightning fan-art, but to make an outfit. The central idea of what the picture SHOULD BE is relegated to the background instead of the foreground, where it should be.Β
When you take a portrait shot of someone, you don't make it so that the background takes up 70% of the picture, do you? No, you zoom in and make sure that the head and upper body is most/all of the picture. When you're taking a wedding picture, you don't have all of the guests and whatnot stand in front of the bride and groom, do you? No, of course not. The guests stand off to the side, or are kneeling in front, or SOMETHING to keep the focus on the bride and groom, WHERE IT SHOULD BE.
THAT is my complaint. The focus of the picture is on her face, instead of the costume, which is where the focus is supposed to be. My comment has NOTHING to do with the actual QUALITY of WHAT was drawn. Just WHERE it was drawn.

Ohh ok, oh well.. I'm not used to paint for costume design, I just paint whenever I have time.
But thanks for the criticism and I might try make another entry more in the line of costume design. Might aswell explore out of my comfort zone! ^^
