Actually, they didn't mean it was the end of the world. Rather the beginning of a new cycle, and besides... The Mayans didn't count leap year days, which puts the end of the world back about 7 or 8 years

Indeed! What gets me is the so-called "evidence" they were using: the famous (now infamous) Mayan Calander. It is a common Christian belief that in the not-so-distant future, Jesus will return and then let loose an event that will kill off the sinful and leave room for a new era of Christianity, and since it was a Christian missionary that helped decode the Mayan Calander, the so-called "end" was associated with that myth. In reality, 12-21-12 wasn't meant to be the end of the world, because actual Mayan priests, the decendents of the people who made the calander, said so! It actually states that 12-21-12 was the end of what was then a future age, and the intention was to start another calander when the time came...basically saying that just because the calander ended doesn't mean the world ended. It's like sitting down every December 31st expecting the world to end every January 1st. Thinking about it that way really makes these doomsday fanatics look even stupider, doesn't it?
It's been 2 days post-doomsday and already they're planning another one! I had to deal with it all year long, and it's just driving me up the wall!
