Blame and her FF review: [link]

I just recently beat FF 10, after just saving outside the final boss and not being bothered to fight him for months, and I figured, "hey why not", since all I've been doing is working on crappy projects for a while.

And yes, FF 10 is my least favourite, and FF 12 is my most favourite.

U mad?

Never played XIV.

Besides, I'm still trying to pretend it doesn't exist.

I actually despise XII, the battle system was kinda boring to me. The characters were pretty meh, their motivations even came off as a bit petty to me.

My two favorites were VI and IX.

VI was just awesome. All around. Like, OMG.

IX takes a while to pick up, but once you beat that place with Black Waltz 3 the game gets really good. Lots of character development, sufficiently scaled difficulty level, beginner friendly skill system, and not to mention. VIVI

I'm really not sure how active turn based ends up more boring than static turn based :I But I guess that's your opinion.

Uuuunless, you're one of the countless number of people who criticise it for the gambit system, saying the game plays itself. Which again I don't understand. Nobody really said that anyone has to amp up the gambit system and make the game easy. I left mine basic so that I could make most of my decisions manually. Admittedly, this did get a bit tedious sometimes, but every turn based game can get that way regardless.

As for 6 and 9, well I'll be more likely to pick up 6, because it looks kind of appealing to me, but I'm not too sure how bothered I'll be to continue 9.

Welp, that's a given, seeing as you said you actually like X. It's hard to be on the same wavelength after something like that.

I guess so. You're the first person I've ever heard claiming XII is it's favorite as well.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Protocol00 In reply to jackkuro [2012-05-03 03:28:12 +0000 UTC]

Well, that's because while I think that xii didn't have that stong a plot, and only like one or two characters were likeable at best, it had a large world to look around, a crapton of side missions to do, great background design as well as monster design, and the mechanics were well suited for quick thinking when up against the game's more difficult bosses.

Whilst I do think a lot of the other games have better plots, plot doesn't make me want to continue playing after it's done. I'm the sort of person that would rather find a new book to read than re-read an old one, and so with (most) other FF games I'd rather find something else to do once I'm finished. A lot of the games before 8 felt really similar to me in terms of gameplay, and the only difference was whether there were job classes or not. From 8 onward, I felt that they kept trying to introduce new gameplay mechanics, but just ended up making things complicated, and even when you get the hang of them, they're still a chore to get around. 12 was different and simple enough for you to fill in the gap between 'press X to kill monster' and actually having to pull off strategies whilst still in a battle.

And yeah, I really don't feel the same about the FF games as the general public does, from what I gather. I think of 7 as an okay game, 10 as a bad one and 12 as a good one. Oh, and I think 4 had the best, if not strangest, story.

THANK YOU AND GOODNIGHT.

THIS IS A BLOCK OF TEXT. IT MAY NOT MAKE TOO MUCH SENSE.

Eh, gameplay is what kept me coming back to Final Fantasy, I've played most of them and it's no coincidence that, as a fan of TBS combat I like X over say, XII and XIII (And XIII-2 and X-2 for that matter). True, true, innovation is an important part on a franchise, and Square Enix couldn't hope to keep people buying with the same core mechanic, so the gimmicks began appearing in all games. Esper system, Job based combat, the Sphere grid... all of these compliment the TBS in some way or fashion, be it making you grind differently or giving it a new approach or depth. Gambits however don't. Pseudo actiony RPG doesn't either. I passed the whole game with about two to three gambits, and some small tinkering when the asses were getting handed. The game, as most people who dislike XII said "Played itself" 90% of the time. The plot was... weak, and the characters weren't stellar either. The landscapes were ok, but that isn't too big a compliment. What I think it did the best was the detailed character models. And that doesn't speak too great of the game.

I never went to Final Fantasy to get a Pseudo action RPG, I went for the turn based combat, for ridiculous and a plot that took itself really seriously. For the odd and unique setting and characters, and it was nice. I guess I dislike most Final Fantasies after X because it departed too far from that. And XII is the greatest offender. It does not feel like a Final Fantasy game, or at least what I expected from one, at all.

With that said, yes, I'm part of the "Mainstream" in regards to which games I like better and which ones I don't, and while I think that 7 is overrated and 6 a tad underapretiated, I can't agree with you saying that 10 was a bad game.

Also, despite the previous blocks of text (sorry about that), no, I don't think 12 is a bad game, I just can't place it with the previous FF games. It has a much better place among some Level 5 RPGs, like Rogue Galaxy, that are more action centered and less plot and character focused. It's just a different really big departure from the series, that's all.

Though I think we can agree in 4 having a really damn weird story.

AND GOOD NIGHT TO YOU TOO. NO REALLY, I'M REALLY SLEEPY.

(God, I really hope I'm not coming across as either a fanboy or an asshole. If I am, I'm truly sorry :< )

Having FFIII for the DS is interesting, it brings the familiar formula of Final Fantasy's origins to a handheld a lot of people have now a days.

But this whole thing is a barrel full of lulz. Nice job

nothingnew8913 [2012-05-02 23:11:39 +0000 UTC]

If you enjoyed the job system of III, you will love V, because it greatly improves on it. The story is not the best in the series, but the gameplay is well worth it.

VI, as many people stated is amazing. You get 14 characters that all have unique skills. Dungeons where you switch between 2 or even 3 parties so you will be using all of your characters. And some of the best characters is the series.

You should give IX another chance, it has a very whimsical appearance but one of the deepest stories in the series. Also just about everything in the game is a reference to an older game in the series.

Final Fantasy Tactics is an amazing game and everyone should play it. Just a warning though that you should have 2 save files because there are points where you can save between battles and there is a one on one fight at one of these points, and if you are not prepared it can be impossible to beat it and you will have to restart the entire game. Also You can recruit Cloud (as well as Balthier if you play the PSP version.)

Tactics advance and A2 are both very good as well.

But FF10 was AWESOME D: I liked the character designs, blitzball WAS fun but at least it wasn't necessary to the story (except like one match), and the sphere grid was an interesting way to level up (though it did take me a little while to get it). So yeah...

But I can pretty much agree with you about FF12, the battle system is probably still my favourite (but playing FF13 afterwards, GAH WHY CAN'T I MOVE). If it was just one thing that put me off was the, how do I put this, style? It was probably the posh accents or clothes or something, I dunno... It's difficult to put my finger on. Basically, I think it could have been better.

And this was a cool way to review, what, 14 games at one time

I love 12's world [because it's very reminicent of Vagrant Story, for perfectly sensible reasons such as being set in the same universe] but the game itself was kinda' meh. Although hunting rare marks was fun.

But GFs and junctioning are actually pretty straightforward...D:

5 is kind of my favourite, it's the first one I ever played and I loved the class change system.

Protocol00 In reply to Nonparael [2012-05-02 09:32:54 +0000 UTC]

I got gfs and junctioning, what I meant was that plot wise, they bring up that GFs might erase memories all of once, and nobody ever really explains what GFs are, where they came from, etc.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Nonparael In reply to Protocol00 [2012-05-02 11:07:32 +0000 UTC]

OIC.

Yes, that tends to happen. Summons are pretty poorly explained across the board, I think, even though they're kind of important in most of the games.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Protocol00 In reply to Nonparael [2012-05-02 11:13:25 +0000 UTC]

Well that's kind of true, but unlike in a lot of the other games where they're more like ancient/semi-ancient beings that are kind of just there, in 8 they're the cause for a large part of the story, which I felt should have been focused on, even just a little more. Personally, it seemed to me that they cut out something as big as that in favour of putting more focus on Rinoa and Squall's relationship.

I might have been harsh on X, but in that game, the summons had a lot of importance and their nature and history was expanded upon- which was one of the very few things I liked about the game.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Nonparael In reply to Protocol00 [2012-05-02 11:30:31 +0000 UTC]

My memory of 8 is a little hazy, since I didn't really get into that one. Mainly I just remember Cid kind of looking like Robin Williams

Yeah, aeon's actually made quite a good deal of sense, all things considered. [I forget what the deal with XIII was though...]

Protocol00 In reply to Nonparael [2012-05-02 12:03:02 +0000 UTC]

...Holy shit he did look like Robin Williams.

I think in XIII the summons were something like a l'cie's personal trial... or something? Hell I'm not sure.

Man, I played Blitz ball, even to the point where I started winning every game because I wanted to get Wakka's ultimate weapon or something. Though, even though I got good at it to the point where it was piss easy, I still didn't like the minigame.

I guess liking everything else is all you, but I found myself generally being annoyed by everything within minutes of every playthrough. If I wasn't so proud about being beaten by a game which I thought terrible, I wouldn't have ever finished it, and just played Digital Devil instead, which I bought at the same time and find infinitely more enjoyable... even without being much of a Shin Megami Tensei fan.

FFXII on the other hand has some of the most beautiful fucking areas I've ever seen in a vidya game ever. And then there's the OST...

granted, the gambit system could get a bit boring at points, but the beauty of it was that if you wanted to turn it off, you could turn it off and play the game without it! PLus, it's the most useful experience farming tool I've EVER SEEN.

I actually liked V and I recommend that you go through with it. And in my own personal opinion IX was amazing. I played it mostly for Freya and Kuja's fagtabulous ass.
I also saw you missed X-2, if you would have played that your review of XIII-2 would have been more like. "Well fuck looks like they revamped up X-2. :/"

Your spoilers of 4 make me iffy on continuing my gameplay of it. D:

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Protocol00 In reply to Queen-Evil-Fluffy [2012-05-02 09:45:41 +0000 UTC]

...Honestly, the reason I even finished 10 was because I felt obligated to once I'd started, because I felt like not finishing would be like admitting defeat to (what I though was) the most annoying RPG game I'd ever played. Then I thought about it, and realized that people actually like ten, and I hated it. So if they actually hated X-2, playing it might cause me an aneurysm. On the other hand, XIII-2 was actually good for me, for the most part, it was just the ending that kind of stomped on my nuts, so to speak.

Also, even though the stuff I listed on ff 4 was a bit... lol, the main reason I actually stopped playing was because I got to a part where the monster levels just jumped, and I didn't know if I skipped a bit or was underleveled or what, because it snapped from being easy as hell to being fucking hard and I didn't have a clue what had just happened. Though I could be remembering wrong.

I enjoyed X-2 to an extent. Yuna was annoying like usual, but I liked Paine. >.<
Mainly the point of the game was to extend the cliffhanger at the end of X. The rest of the actual story seemed more just randomly placed. Plus a lot of the game seemed like a joke. There's even a bikini scene.
What probably pissed more people off is trying to get 100% story completion. It's just complete bullshit what you have to go through. I still haven't gotten 100% and I've been playing that game for years. D: The farthest I got was 99%. Freaking bullshit.

Maybe I'll pick it up again. It's on my list of games to beat. Along with XIII-2, but I have a bad feeling I know how that is going to end with how the story is going. >.>
