Description
Another small piece of alternate history. Zámořský protektorát Země svatého Václava (Oversea Protectorate of Saint Wenceslas Land). In the upper left corner is the early Czechoslovakian flag and the historical flag of Bohemia. In the middle of the flag is a polar bear which is typical for the islands.

Franz Josef Land was discovered by a private Austrian expedition and therefore could not be attached to Austria-Hungary. In 1914 Isljamov Ischak Ibragimovich proclaimed the islands a Russian territory. However, small group of Czechoslovak legions trying to go home tried to travel on the sea through Scandinavia. They landed on these islands during their journey and left few soldiers here to protect the islands from possible Red army invaders. After the rest of legions arrived to newborn Czechoslovakia, the government immediately sent a new military expedition to the islands. In 1922 the Franz Josef Land became an official protectorate of Czechoslovakia. In the post-war period the name Franz Josef Land was not suitable for the Czechoslovak republic and therefore the islands were renamed to "Saint Wenceslas Land."
