More commission work, this time a pair of lovely mares <3 Nightowl was designed by a member of the Arena, and has been rehaired with Dollyhair's After Midnight and Water Nixie.Derpy/Breezy/Bubblecup/Coolio/San Diego Comic-Con 2012 Exclusive/Grey And Blonde Pegasus/Ditzy Doo is a mare that needs no introduction. This is my first custom of her in the regular, playful pony size! Dollyhair.com has been sold out of the Lemonade nylon hair that is a perfect match for quite some time, so I used their Lemonade Blonde saran hair instead and improvised. ^_^

Nightowl's perm is amazing. Do you use rubber bands when you perm a painted pony? I did once and the rubber band fused with the sealant and pulled the paint off. What should I do to prevent that from happening?

True to my word, I took a few pics of Ringlet's mane and tail right after I put the curlers in. I don't know how helpful this will be, but at least you can kind of see how I section off the hair and stuff.

Admittedly, I don't have much problem making curls. My main issue is making bangs on a painted pony. You have to push the hair right down against the head and I worry that any way I do that will cause something to stick to the head.

For bangs, I thatch the wet hair and pull it down below the pony's face on either side, then wrap paper towel around her forehead a bit (it should mostly be flattening the hair and shouldn't actually touch much of the paint job at all). Then I tie a rubber band on the bottom ends of the hair and weight it, then blast everything with a hairdryer for a few minutes to heat set. After it dries, I cut.
Bangs are really, really tricky to do though because you can't exactly boil-set them, so even doing it this way causes them to start sticking up a little bit if you handle them too much. If you wanted to, you could "set" the bangs with watered-down Mod Podge, but that would eliminate the ability to brush them.

Yeah I tried boil-setting the bangs on my last custom and I ended up pulling a sort of headband of paint off around his head lol. I will try your method next time. Thanks a lot.

I don't usually use rubber bands no, but when I do I try not to let them touch the painted surface at all. What I do is I wrap the wet hair around drinking straws, wrap a strip of paper towel around the bottom to stop the ends from sticking out, and secure the towel to the straw with a bobby pin. It's hard to describe, but if I remember next time I'm curling hair I'll snap some pictures for you
