Monster Manor Character Profiles
Name: Mark the Mandrake
Age: Lost count at 200.
Monster Type: Mandrake (Plant monster)
Description: Mark is tall and slender; his skin is dark, almost tree bark color. His ears are misshapen, looking more like dark leaves. He has blood red lips, deep green eyes, and short dirt blond hair. His right arm is human like but his left arm is more like a tangle of thorny vines with large spike like thorns for fingers. He wears clothing made of dark leaves, making him look much like a walking tree.
Background: Mandrakes are humanoid plants who become immortal upon reaching adulthood. As younglings, they grow and mature underground with long plant like hair to mark their place. Humans have been known to pull the younglings from the soil to use the healing properties of their roots. However, the younglings give off an ear piercing scream when they are removed from the soil to alert their parents, causing a human to pass out in pain and or fear. Removing the roots of a youngling will kill it; thus the Mandrakes have learned to carefully hide their nurseries from human eyes.
Mark was born in a nursery in a Cherokee Indian reservation in the forests of South Carolina. He reached adulthood and became friends with the residing Cherokee tribe who were fighting to regain their lands from the government in the court system. Mark was their protector from those who would harm the tribe and he took his job seriously. However, a billionaire named Greg Hans wanted to develop the land the tribe had reclaimed to build a shopping mall. He learned that a Mandrake was guarding the tribe and hired monster hunters to capture him and to drive the tribe out of the area. The monster hunters started a forest fire to drive Mark out into the open as well as force the tribe to flee the area. Only the fire raged out of control. The Cherokee tribe suffered many losses trying to put it out before they were forced to flee the raging flames. Mark was captured with the use of weed killers to weaken him and thrown in wire cage to be taken to places unknown.
Mark managed to escape from the monster hunters and return to the Cherokee tribe. Only he found that they had abandoned the village they once lived in. No traces were left as to where they had gone; Mark felt he had failed them. He wandered the forests of South Carolina, hoping to find his lost tribe until he came upon two other monsters also wandering the wilderness. They were surviving the best they could but knew almost nothing about living in the wild. Mark offered to help them; they accepted. Mark has become the humble leader of the small group and has vowed never to fail those he protects again. He uses all of his strength, wisdom, and courage to lead his new tribe through the good times and the bad.
Personality: Mark is a kind but firm leader who chooses his moves carefully and patiently. He will not jump into or throw any of his friends into any situation unless he sees there is no other choice. Mark prefers to talk through a situation rather than fight one out but will fight if necessary. He carries with him the wisdom of the Cherokee tribe and uses that knowledge to avoid humans, especially those who are monster hunters. Mark knows that not all humans are evil but he also knows that when a human is frightened, he attacks. He fears failure and uses that fear to try to anticipate any surprises that may arise.
Powers: Mark is a living plant with the ability to communicate and control the plant life around him. He can’t make any tree or plant do anything extreme like walk on their own but they can send him warnings of oncoming danger with vibrations through the root system. He can summon powerful supernatural vines from the ground to grab anything he wishes and hold it down or drag it under the earth. Although Mark does not believe in killing, he knows that the fear of being buried alive serves as a powerful deterrent to any would be threat. The same vines he uses to grab people or machines he can also use as weapons; whips that swing in from the ground or the trees.
Mark can move through the root system of trees and vines with incredible speed. He can place a person into a form of seed and carry that seed with him as a passenger. Mark carries a bow with several arrows, all poisoned tipped with the sap of various trees and flowers for several effects. Mark is also a master hand to hand fighter and can use his thorn like hand to block the blow from swords. As a living plant, Mark heals rapidly and one would have to destroy over two thirds of him in order to kill him. This makes him a very formidable leader.
Weaknesses: Although Mark can heal rapidly, he is very susceptible to strong weed killers and fire. Although he can control plant life with a mere thought, he follows the Cherokee tradition to consult the spirits before moving nature to his bidding in fear of angering them. This slows down his abilities to use plant life as a weapon or defense. Mark’s fear of failing his new tribe constantly makes him second guess himself and blame himself if something goes wrong. This makes it difficult for him to make split second decisions when things get tense. That is when he turns to his tribe for their thoughts and advice or merely prays for help from the spirits.
