Description A micro-raptor and a scorpion find themselves at an impasse on a tree limb. The two appear to be thumb wrestling. Who will win? Who will get eaten? The dinosaur is a unknown species, perhaps a species of Microraptor or Sinornithosaurus. The scorpion is a venomous buthid that can climb small shrubs and trees. It must be thinking “ I can’t let you do that, Dave!”. A fun project, using a photograph of a small creek running through my property and a limb from a crape myrtle tree near my neighbors’ home. I used a crinkled paper bag and torn pieces of paper to get some reference for the flaking bark. It took longer to draw the branch than the dino and scorpion. I liked the effect of the loose lines. The original pencil drawing is placed in scraps. SilentRavyn’s “Microraptor” was the inspiration for my little dino.

Thanks and hope ya’ll enjoy,

Blair

A pleasure- both the raptor and scorpion look so natural in their poses and look (not to mention how you handled the feathers and skin textures)!

Hi Marcos,

Sorry for the late reply, Its been a busy travel season. I did use many pictures as references. To get the colors just right, I cloned the color from the photos and used them in the painting, so both the pencil sketch (underpainting) and reference photos were open at the same time. I pasted scanned images of torn paper to give the effect of flaking bark. I was very pleased how the effect turned out. Im glad you liked the picture. Digital painting is so much faster than traditional drawing, but I finf taditional media more relaxing.

All the best,

Blair

No problem about the late answer . You did a very good picture, the colours, lines and the general scene are cool. I supposed that you used several images as references, but everything came out very well suited.

Hi Vlydra,

Sorry for replying so late.

Many thanks, and I am very happy you noticed the 'Dave' reference. Your drawing of Spirit and friends is amazing, I hope you won the contest. and you may not believe this, but the webcam of the baby otter brought a tear to my eye. At this very moment I am drawing a picture of a river otter mom teaching her three pups how to swim. What a wonderful coincidence

Thanks again and I can't stop watching the otter pup being tickled.

all the best,

Blair

No problemo Hehe well a few months ago it would have passed right over my head - I only found out about Dave and friends in my evolution class at uni. I didn't win the contest (I don't think my picture was particularly original anyway) but I enjoyed drawing it. Yeah, everytime I see that otter gif I grin like a maniac. It's so sweet . I can't wait to see your otter family drawing!

And thank-you very much for the watch, llama and the fave

Thanks Billy,

I got the idea of the crouching microraptor from some other paintings I had seen on dA,

your raptorandon is a very cool fusion of two deadly predators. It would be a cool monster movie.

Take care and all the best,

Blair

This is one of the best and most lively depictions of prehistory I've ever seen, and certainly the funniest! Their poses are brilliant, and the little dino seems to be grinning. She (he?) is really cute, and I like the lively colours you chose for the feathers! Especially the red underside is a nice touch and makes me think of robins and other birds with similar colours.
I love the incredible amount of detail you put into this, from the lighting and shading on the feathers to the shiny armor of the scorpion to the background. The bark texture really is awesome.

Also I just wanted to say, when viewing this as a thumb, it's a little hard to make out. My eyes keep wanting to go to the space between the wing of the dino and it's thigh, if you make the contrast bigger where his head is and where the scorpion is, in order to draw the eye there, it would really improve it.

Many thanks Kotorigaro,

Your digital paintings are fantastic, they have the feel of tradition art, I really love the portrait of Astrid.

I hope you and your folks are okay. I was watching the news this morning about the large earthquake that hit near ChristChurch. A colleage and friend of mine lives in Palmerston North, she's doing okay.

Thanks for the wonderful comments and take care,

Thank you very much, I'm very glad you like them! I use Corel Painter for the beginnings of paintings, as it's perfect for creating traditional-looking textures.

We're all perfectly fine over here, I live on the North Island and we didn't feel a thing. Everyone seems to have gotten lucky down south, no one was killed and only two guys went to hospital with real injuries. So a whole lot of expensive property damage, but the people are ok.

Thank you for your lovely comments!
