Description
I just finished rereading one of my favorite sci-fi novels, The Architect of Sleep, written by Steve Boyett. I remember first reading the novel when I was in High School (ca. 1986). I was disappointed that the novel ended abruptly, and no sequels were published. I believe manuscripts were written, but remain hidden to this day. The second installment was to be titled “Geography of Dreams”, it was to focus more on the cultural and political nuisances of a society populated by sentient raccoons. On an alternate Earth, civilization developed in the Americas, and raccoons, not apes, walked upright and learned to fashion sophisticated tools as well as domesticate llamas. These beings cannot speak verbally, but use sign language and body gestures to communicate. “Architect” begins with a store clerk named Jim Bentley, who’s passion in exploring caves, leads him to another alternate reality where he becomes embroiled in the turmoil and intrigue of a feudal society on the brink of revolution. His guide and protector, who Bentley, nicknames Truck, is an intuitive raccoon (A dreamer) who protects him, this strange “bald Ape” from the paranoid and dangerous Stripes: A warrior caste of raccoons armed with intimidating gauntlets with large sickle-like blades (very similar to Freddy Kruegers gloved hand). I drew this picture as an homage to this wonderful book. The original art was painted by James Gurney. This scene portrays a female stripe who is guarding an old aqueduct, which is being used to smuggle cannons and other weapons to the separatists. I hope you like this Photoshop painting. It took ~ 6 hours to complete.Related content

This looks like the great pinups you used to produce under your old username. Pretty sure I missed at least a year's worth of your old art since I lost all my art gallery bookmarks when my pc died. Anyway, shame about this book not getting a sequel, but I suspect Steve was seriously wierded out by furries harassing him at home. He did a (disappointing) sequel to Ariel, though.

I suppose i should not have used such a vague adjective, i meant it only in the sci-fi sense of characters with human-like traits. The second sentence sort of qualifies what i meant by sentience. E.g., civilization, walking upright, and sophiticated tools.
Thanks,
Blair

Excellent work on the face. A real attention to detail there.
An impressive job, well done.
I've yet to read such a novel? But after reading your description of it, it does interest me.

Wonderful I love the composition and the perspective you used here, from the fine detail of face extending back to the misty mountains. I like the earth-tone colors used here, and the fur patterns are very striking. A great interpretation of a novel, especially considering it never got all the way to the publisher.

It's really cool, and I love the patterning on her fur (not to mention the texture on her fur is outstanding) . Also, nice touch with the tag on her ear. But you lost me with the furry boobs. If she's a raccoon then she'd have a set of six teats up and down, and closer to her body (also would make it easier to maneuver around like the agile fighter that she seems to be) rather than two big mammary glands on her chest. Granted, I haven't read the book, but if you're going for anthro if only seems right to get it as anatomically proper on the animal side as possible rather than just tacking an animal head on a human body and calling it good. It almost seems lazy that way.
Well done though, very well done.

Thanks Catherine,
I agree with you wholeheartedly I know some folks might consider nipples or multiple sets of them too adult; I was going for a PG of PG-13 scene. I guess if raccoon evolution paralleled that of hominids, convergent traits might develop also, large craniums--narrower pelvises--smaller litters--fewer mammary glands--larger milk supply to fuel a baby stripe and its fast growth and large brain. Complete conjecture though, but that's what I love about sci-fi and fantasy, you can just have fun
thanks again for the kind comments and all the best,
Blair
