Description I legitimately loved making this character; doing the research, figuring out how to stay mostly historically accurate while having enough leeway for an interesting character. I also wound up loving Quetzal more than I thought I would, too. I've definitely put in a lot more effort than I typically do! Here's hoping she's approved for 's opening!

1/5/19: Updated art and outfit! Quetzal's gone through a bit of a change since she stepped foot into Sybal Heim, for better or worse.

Name: Quetzalxochitl Ocelotl (keht-zal-zo-cheat os-e-lot) [see additional notes]

Nickname: Quetzal

Age: 20

Physical Age: 19

Height: 5'

Hair: Black

Eyes: Green

Faction: Β Disciple

Though she is confused by the welcoming she received upon entering Sybal Heim, Quetzal has come to enjoy the atmosphere of community that the Organizer and his disciples have worked to create. She is wary of people's motivations, however, so she is more neutral.

Occupation: Woodcarver Carpenter

Sybal Form: Quetzalocelotl or The Feathered Jaguar

Roughly the size of an average female jaguar, Quetzal's sybal form is noticeably different for the dull gold bands on three of the jaguar's limbs and the large feathered headdress reminiscent of the Nahua god Quetzacoatl.

Much like the jaguar it takes it's form from, Quetzal's sybal is muscular and weighty, built for agility and power and able to leap from rooftop to rooftop as if among tree branches.

However, unlike an actual jaguar, this sybal cannot roar and neither is it aggressive. If anything, this sybal is affectionate, playful, and loves to curl up next to others and purr from happiness. It's desire for affection, fun, and love stems from Quetzal closing off the more sensitive parts of her heart due to her rejection from her village.

Sybal Power: Enshield

Enshield is a protective ability, materializing as a barrier of quetzal feathers that negates most kinds of damage attempted against the shell. This ability is mainly used to protect and/or save Quetzal's sybal form and one other being from harm, be it from direct attacks, runaway carts, or fall damage. Because of the strength of the barrier, it only lasts a few minutes before the feathers dematerialize and cannot be renewed for the rest of the night.

Docile or Feral: Feral

Quetzal has spent most of her life lashing out in anger and forcing the hurt, pain, and desire for comfort into the deep recesses of her heart. As such, she is unable to retain control over her Sybal form--it wanders about at night in search of affection, comfort, and companionship, often enjoining others to play.

Personality: Though originally a loving and affectionate child, Quetzal has grown into a serious, sullen, cynical, young woman that's more likely to get into a fistfight than settle things with her words. She is stand-offish, always picking up at the slighest hint of rejection to protect herself from growing too attached to others. However, since coming to Sybal Heim, she's been trying to be more open with others and tries hard to keep from getting into fights. She wants to belong to this place that welcomed her, but history has taught her to be wary.

Prior to Sybal Heim, Quetzal rarely had anything to look forward to. Though she was often away from the village, she didn't enjoy her self-imposed exiles and only felt them necessary to stop the villagers from hating her grandfather.

History: Born in late 1521 to a conquistador and Nahua woman in Tenochtitlan, Quetzal had barely opened her eyes before her mother was taken from her as the city was ravaged by smallpox. In fear for the small child's barely begun life, her maternal grandfather spirited her from the city, abandoning their home and wealth least the conquistador come back for the child. Seeking refuge in a small village, he was able to find a new mother to suckle the child until she was able to eat solid foods.

For the first part of her childhood, Quetzal was unknowing of the stigma that her mixed birth carried, allowing her to run and play with the other children. As the circumstances of her birth were accidentally revealed, the small village's opinion of her and her grandfather changed noticeably, almost overnight. It was then that Quetzal learned what it was like to be refused a community.

For the next decade, Quetzal lashed out at others in anger of her rejection, including her own grandfather, who she considered to only regard her with pity. With anger raging and refusing to back down, she would often get into fights, most she lost due to being overwhelmed by the other children, but she never backed down. After a time, she began to spend nights outside the village, at first sneaking food away before learning to hunt and fish, mostly by sneakily watching the villagers.

As she learned to fend for herself, Quetzal began to spend more and more time away from the village, at first a night or two, increasing to a fornight at a time. It was after one of these forays that she came back to the village to find it razed to the ground with half the villagers missing and the other half dead. In a panic, she raced to her grandfather's home only to find him dead, cut down from behind by cowards.

Though Quetzal had spent many years angry at the man, feeling that he pitied her, the sudden loss of her grandfather cut her deeply. There was no longer a chance for her to resolve her anger, to seek forgiveness and reconcile with the man who had raised her. In great pain, she let out a fierce cry to the heavens, a cry of pain and sorrow and loss.

In her grief, Quetzal fled the village for the final time and sought refuge in the wilderness that had become home to her. Scant few days later, though overwhelmed by her sorrow, regrets, and a strong desire to have just one more chance at a community and love, she at last came to her senses and found herself at the edge of a forest. It appeared strange to her but felt welcoming, as if resonating with the longing in her heart. It felt to her as if it promised everything that she wanted--a place to belong, people to love her unconditionally--if only she would just wander deep into it's heart. With nothing tying her down or to lose, she stepped past the outer edge.

Half a year has passed since she emerged from the forest into Sybal Heim. Though her heart still aches for her grandfather, she has begun to tentatively integrate into this strange new world that so readily welcomed her. Though she remains wary and quick to anger at the slightest hint of rejection, she retains some hope that she will finally be able to call a place, this place, home.

Update 1/5/19: After the riots, Quetzal fell in with a group of carpenters to help rebuild parts of the city damaged on that fateful day, making use of her carving skills.

Additional Info:
-Quetzal entered Sybal Heim in 1892, a great leap from her time of 1540
-For her voice, imagine Cree Summer's voice as Panthera from the 2011 Thundercats
-Because of her sybal form, she has nearly nightly awkward moments where she'll "come to" around people she doesn't know. She's embarrassed by it and tries to act like she does in her sybal form didn't happen.
-Nahua did not have surnames or family names. They would occasionally have second names or dedication names but would never be called this as a title. In Quetzal's case, Ocelotl is her dedication name, something she adopted after the death of her grandfather to denote her dedication to starting a new life in Sybal Heim. As such, please only call her Quetzalxochitl if you want to address her by her full name, unless you want to use Ocelotl as a jumping off point for a rp for Quetzal to correct it's usage.

Β  I keep my fingers crossed for you. Love your Char. The feathers you used for reference are really beautiful. Her history is kinda the reversed version of Alva's. You CHar was rejected while LAvas was accepted in her new family. WOuld be nice to see how they exchange

I will admit, I froze at the name, trying to imagine HOW you pronounce it. And I'm sorry, but my character has enough problems with the concept of 'wait, Asians have family names FIRST? What sorcery is this!!!', so she would most likely call her Miss Ocelotl- and pronounce it incorrectly, on top of it. :/
^^ I love how much work you put into her! I hope to see you in the group!

lol That'd be fine! Quetzal would definitely tell her how to pronounce her name and what should and should not be used to address her lol And thanks! I hope to see everyone in the group come selection time, too!
