Description
So unless I do some MAJOR research, you are not getting every single kind of vampire there could possibly be. There's a lot of vampires out there.I've been meaning to do this for some time. Because the thing is, 'vampire' is as broad a term as 'fairy' and though my usual vamps are alive and have families and so on, the folklore types also exist. There is a type missing here, plus a bajillion monster types as I said.
These are the three sorts you will most 'commonly' find in the Otherworlds(vampires are actually pretty rare, hence the inverted commas...).
Firstly,
The major difference between the first two is strictly how they choose to behave.
'Modern' vampires - They stay awake in the daytime and have the audacity to get things like jobs and girlfriends. They are not dead, and they have neither the strengths nor the weaknesses commonly associated with vampires these days. They wear whatever the hell they like and some of them don't use the accent on principle.
The fact that this one has pointy ears is only because he's a fairy (vampire is a mutation, not a species)
(I would have used Johann as an example of modern vampires, but.. he doesn't look obviously modern enough and he does the whole spooky castle, bats/wolves thing, etc. - note that this is what i should have written at 11pm last night, but brain.)
'Traditional' vampires - They have bats and wolves and wear capes and evening wear. They tend to live in castles and have doors that creak like nails on a chalk board and lots of dribbly candles. Possibly they use the accent. They tend to stay up at night. They are also not dead, and have neither the strengths or weaknesses associated with vampires. Again, any species may be this sort of vampire, but they are usually human.
'Folklore' vampires - In the Otherworlds, they certainly wouldn't be referred to as 'folklore' because Otherworlders call that sort of stuff 'history'. These kinds of vampires are dead, little more than walking corpses reanimated by a curse or some other black magic. Sometimes they may have had a soul attached to them by whoever cast the spell, but they are unlikely to know what they are doing. They tend to shuffle about at night breaking into houses and tormenting people. Sometimes they drink blood, sometimes they only throttle people. Some are the result of a necromancer casting a spell on themselves - they will be fully in possession of their senses and will be seeking blood. There are a bajillion kinds of these, so.. yeah. THESE are the vampires that will drop motionless in the sunlight (I guess the curse only works in the dark) and may be vulnerable to holy things and garlic flowers and whatnot. Varies by type, spell, etc. You can stake them but all it does is prevent the corpse getting up and bothering people. Chopping their head off and putting it at their feet or reburying them upside down also works. They have various abilities, but again, it varies/depends.

This is an interesting take on general vampire ideals. ^^

Sounds like folklore vampires would end up being in the most exciting books.
Well, though I could just be saying that because I feel like they are barely used nowadays...
It's true that there are as many vampires as there are flavors of pie now though...
But hey, at least ogres never really changed!
..... well, but nobody really likes them... except for Shrek I suppose.

Folklore of all kinds has changed over the years, usually with the monsters becoming if not friendly, just slightly less scary. 👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Hmm.. I don't know. The most basic form of vampire as shown here is little more than a souless, shuffling corpse that breaks into people bedrooms at night. Terrifying if it breaks into your bedroom, but it can be dealt with fairly easily, so long as you have the right tools. And of course we've all seen the whole 'let's dig up the coffin and stake it' story before. Some of the other super scary ones would probably make for exciting stories, the ones that are less familiar, like the soucouyant or the loup-garou, where the audience won't know where this is going.
The reason things changed over the years is precisely because of this conflict of what is traditional and what is original - people want to read what they haven't read before, and if someone writes the same old 'there's a scary monster let's kill it' thing, then that's boring and unoriginal, but if you try to do something new, you get people complaining that '

Yeah, that's true... when people want something original and new, but then dislike it for being exactly that, then it does make you wonder if people even know what they want.
Well, unless people simply want a new take on vampires, but don't want them to lose their dignities, a-la shiny chests.
This kind of makes me miss Buffy, actually. xD

I understand the 'difference' or comparison of vampires but if you could add a white blob on one side and make it the 'shiny' vampires then it would add a good touch or just no blob would be required due to the background.
I like the expressions on the two that have any
The third seems dumb
I guess he wasn't sent to school much (not that both have a direct relationship).

The third one is just a walking corpse, so... there's no-one in there (and if there was, it would be a soul that didn't really know where it was or what it was doing, in a dream like state... although some magicians would know exactly what they were doing... this is why I had to limit it to three, I could go on and on and on XD

No I got that... I was referring to your comment about 'the last one doesn't look too bright'.
Technically Twilight vampires would fall under modern types... but.. they don't exist in the Otherworlds..

Interesting system. I particularly like the way your "traditional" vampires aren't harmed by daylight, but simply "go offline" in it. That's a cool twist on the old cliche!^^

Well, actually my traditional vampires aren't affected by sunlight at all (y'know unless they stare directly at the sun or something) and folklore vampires don't burn up in the sunlight - in the stories I've read, they just drop down motionless or disappear at cock crow(sunrise). It's not my thing, that's what folklore actually says(I feel like I shouldn't take credit for it ^-^; ). Also, Dracula doesn't burn in the sunlight either, he just loses most of (if not all)his vampire abilities. The whole 'burning up in the sun' thing was started by the movies.

I know that sunlight hurting them is a relatively modern fictional element. I didn't know folklore specifically says that they drop motionless though. Yours was just the first one that I'd heard that one. *shrug*

Fair enough, I just didn't feel like it was okay to take credit for an idea that wasn't mine. I think it depends on the country... in Russia certainly this sort of creature just drops down at sunrise. I'm not actually sure about the more usual ones... they seem to be able to phase through the ground(given that the graves must be dug open) so perhaps they're solid or they just get dragged magically back to their graves at sunrise...

Yep, I love my folklore. I like the literature version of vampires too, but... well, in the Otherworlds, things are... sorta.. well there are things about my vampires I can't explain because spoilers >.< All my species are based on folklore where possible, but because I'm playing with stereotypes and tropes, I work with literature types too...

It's fun to see what you come up with for your vampires indeed! Spoilers, blah, I like to be surprised anyway! Taking the time to research and add in all the little cool details to your species really is worth it, awesome!
