I cant imagine any of the pre generation era ships even being able to survive a borg attack let alone escape.
Im sure plot contrivance would play a big part but I imagine if kirk had met the borg first federation ships would have been enormous by the time picard captained a star ship.

Kirk: Scotty we need more speed.
Scotty: I'm giving er all she's got captain.

Actually they are at warp. Whenever Kirk says: "Best speed to", for example on Wrath of Kahn, when Spock reported to him, "Engine room reports auxiliary power restored. We can proceed at impulse power." Kirk answered, "Best speed to Regula." On Search for Spock, after the Enterprise went to warp and Kirk commented the officers on their performance, he then said: "Best speed to Genesis."
This plot is similar to the TNG episode The Best of Both Worlds, when the Enterprise D was heading for Earth at high warp, with a Borg Cube in pursuit and the Enterprise couldn't outrun it. It would be the same with Kirk's Enterprise, although knowing Scotty, he may be able to push the Enterprise to a high enough speed to escape, or at least keep ahead of the cube, until they reach Earth.
