Yes, it's a firefly.  And yes, the seasons of the year, and the cycles of life/death/renewal.

Beautiful, I don't know what to say summer, autumn and winter are awsome and I feel that the painting really contain the atmosphere of those three seasons, only the spring painting to me looks strange, I think that its the colour black - black tree, which I conect to negative - sad, lonely, depressed - feelings. And spring, to me, after the long, dark and cold winter should be something happy, full of light an life....but that's only my opinion... The other three are awsome, very intimate, as though stealing from my  childhood memories and fantasies. A beautiful piece of art!

(sorry for my spelling, English isn't my mother language)

Loved the "Autumn" segment, and stone in "Winter" feels so coooooold; but I am embarrassed to say that I cannot help but feel a bit scared by "Spring" itself. The only colours that remained were green and red; they have symbolism in Christianity as the only somber colours that survive every winter. I do not remember many details at the moment, but  I can surely tell you that Red and Green are complementary, like primary light 'partners', though not an ideal match. Traditionally we represented the primary colours - aka colours resposible to create white/light = the 7 colours indentified by Human eye like: Purple, Orange, etc - as 3 main colours named Red, Yellow and Blue. But nowadays that term has been changing to replace Yellow with Green because Yellow could have been misrepresented as light; when we complement blue, red and green the effect produced is light (or white). European religious (christian) clerics in medieval times had the notion that these two colours were even capable of producing like a 3-d effect when together, and used in formal sculpting works to represent what we could describe as "transcendence of living nature as light"; more simply spiritual enrichment after death. Please, I do not want to offend you, I am genuinely interested by this subject; could you explain what you are trying to portray with "Spring"? I only thought it would be interesting to note.

Her choice could also simply be an aesthetic one-- the other three seasons are very dark to the eye, and if she made spring's too bright all over the composition, it would stick out and perhaps throw off the set.

Wow, yes, indeed.. I already sent 2 llamas for both of you (artist Puimun), because that was so amazing! Thank you so much for your time spent in my comment. It was very heartful of you; thought I am just now sending you this replay, and I wanted to provide you more. May be I should have shortened my comment a bit when I wrote it. Thank you so much again, Ash.

Perhaps the artist is trying to portray how Spring is very much a season defined by its transitional properties.  All the other seasons seem to go on for a while in the same sort of pattern: they have characteristics that begin rather instantly and remain throughout the whole season.  Spring, however, is the time when winter is melting away as things slowly begin their annual renewal.  Before flowers bloom, the ice and rain has to trickle to a stop.  Before animals are born, the darkness of the days must fade away as the orbit of the earth and sun change so that the days seem longer with the increase in sunlight.  Spring cannot happen without the "death" of the winter elements, whereas summer happens quickly because spring has already brought out the sun, so it only need get hotter; fall happens quickly (or at least quicker than spring, in my opinion), because when it's time for them to die, the leaves do their annual duty and die as it gets colder; winter happens quickly because it's already been getting colder due to the autumnal season.  Spring is the total restart of the cycle, and therefore manifests slower.

Of course, this is mostly my own interpretation, and I must confess my interpretation of the seasonal paces of change are rather biased due to my living in the Pacific Northwest, where spring for us is actually more like two months of continuous rain, and then one month of fresh greenery, flowers, brightness, pollen, etc. until WHAMP suddenly summer is here and everything is hot and unbearable. Haha! But, I thought I'd chime in with my interpretation since you haven't received an answer from the artist herself yet. Good day to you!

Beautifully stunning! It's hard to believe it's traditional. Do you have any progress shots for any of your pieces? I'd like to see your method

I don't have any progress shots for these, except for maybe the first photograph here: shadowscapes-stephanielaw.blog…
They're pretty quick, so I didn't bother to take any intermediate scans.

This is so utterly gorgeous. Every single one is both intensely evocative of its season and of a more ethereal, mystical quality. I hope you offer these in larger sizes at some point in the future.

puimun In reply to cibokilley [2013-07-20 04:17:39 +0000 UTC]

for the set of 4 (like in this image), or for each?  I could do that for the 4-set, but would not be possible for each one, as the originals are small and only 4".

cibokilley In reply to puimun [2013-07-20 06:32:31 +0000 UTC]

Oh yes, for the set of 4, of course! So say, um, hmm... 30 inches, divided by five, that'd be six inches across per image, plus mebbe half an inch between each, with the rest of the width on the outer borders? Totally a rough estimate of course, I'm happy to leave the actual math up to you so that the series can be planned out exactly how you'd prefer! If this is possible, please let me know! I can Note you with an offer, unless you have a set price you'd like to charge?

Thank you!

I would have to get that specially printed, so I'll have to get a final quote.  But generally for that size print it costs $75.00 + shipping.
You can email me at stephlaw @ gmail.com if you're still interested.

As the life of the tree ascends and descends with the rising and falling of the sap.  The four paintings fit together beautifully.

I have two of your prints waiting to be framed, so I guess I should hold off on this one for a while.

I love this... and especially the continuity with the tree (world tree?) and what appears to be an opening on each one... a doorway, a path, inspiration... so lovely.
