Fox spirits are adept shape-shifters. They are able to assume human form – a young girl, a beautiful woman, an old man. They are long-lived, and perhaps as a result become bored and seek entertainment among humans. The older and more powerful spirits often have multiple tails, with the oldest ones having nine-tails. They have a quixotic nature, sometimes using their talents to play tricks, and other times acting as faithful guardians or lovers.
In Japan, fox spirits are frequently associated with the god Inari. They are celestial guardians whose talents are used for benevolence towards the humans who worship Inari.
There are many stories of fox spirits assuming the form of a beautiful woman. At dusk they wait for the lone travelers along quiet lanes.
“Come with me,” she beckons with sweet voice and guile. Helpless in the face of otherworldly charms, the man follows, lured to the fox’s den which illusion has shaped to a fantastic palace filled with riches. When morning comes there is nothing but dirt and leaves and the bewildered traveler finds himself alone and lost.
The collection of tales “Chinese Ghost and Love Stories” by P’u Sung-Lin is filled with the escapades of fox spirits.

A beautiful painting, and I love the stories of these fox spirits! But they are not always benevolent...have you ever read the Korean folktale the fox girl? That one is frankly terrifying. o.O [link]

I love all of your works. Just had to pop in a comment on this one because of my love of kitsunes. My muse might just be one in disguise.

these foxes aren't the small, lean ones I usually see in your paintings!! they are bulky and have a lot more muscle to them. I just love how, at first glance, she SEEMS human, but she's a fox in the mirror!

I love anything related to foxes and kitsune, and your piece is really beautiful. The mirror adds emphasis to the kitsune myths (and makes you wonder if the woman's companions are also kitsune).

I love fox tales! I own a book about one and I always thought them fascinating! A fantastic depiction of them, as a spiritual/mythical vibe to it.

Normally black makes other colors look dark in my watercoloring attempts. Yours is anything but dull, any tips you can share?
