Description
The famous Afghan Girl, Sharbat Gula as photographed by Steve McCurry for National Geographic in the early 1980's.This is a vector I did sporadically during my free time in one of the graphic art courses I took when I was in high school : ) It was a gift for my dad, who has the original poster of her in his garage. I also have a poster of her, and managed to find the original Nat Geo issue featuring her on ebay. : ) It's just.. one of my favorite photographs of all time. My vector does it no justice!
Original Photograph (C) Steve McCurry/Nat Geo
Program: Adobe Photoshop CS2
Time: About an hour a day for three weeks
Process: Took original 40 something by something image, posterized to medium detail to enhance color replication accuracy. I highly recommend you vector-ers to try this, it really helps get those undefined shades that are hard to vector. **Please note, this is not simply a posterized version done in two seconds in photoshop, this is a vector OF the posterized version.
Full view por favor! Warning, it may eat your computer screen. xD
I'd also like to share with you some of my favorite Sharbat Gula replications/fan art here on dA:

Also...anybody know where I can watch the documentary about finding her online? : )
The original photograph can be found in Steve McCurry's book "Looking East" which I highly recommend!

I don't like automated vectors, but it was a good idea for a gift

Thanks! (: It actually wasn't automated though, I posterized it in photoshop (which would have been automated), but then I went over it and vectored it myself, nearly pixel by pixel! (: I posterized it first so that I could have more defined shades on the left side of her face where it's darker, because I was having trouble with it not having more defined colors... I could hardly see it. xDD

aaah okay! just looked a lot like a automatically vectorized picture. I can see it's a lot of work then

Yeah, I probably shouldn't have done it so exactly, maybe if I smooth out the edges more it'll look less automated

Thank you so much! (: I'm so grateful to Steve McCurry for braving the Pakistan refugee camp to take this picture. It changed my life!

So true. Her life was probably near impossible, and you can just see it in her face. Such a shame.

Aren't they?! I don't know how it's possible for someone to have such gorgeous eyes. The eyes themselves took HOURS. I was zoomed in 100%+ and it was like every color of the rainbow in there!
