We were supposed to
conquer the world,
just you and I
with our big ideas
filled to bursting with hot air
and a trace of
invincibility lodged deep
in the creases of
our oh-so cocky smiles.

We were supposed to
paint something beautiful with
our words and memories,
extracts from the best of times
when eternal meant the night
wouldn't end, we could
watch fire erupt from
the horizon and stay strong
long after the bottle
was empty.

We were supposed to
live forever with the stars
curled tightly in our hair,
not surviving, not existing
in an animated body,
not staring out the windows
of a glossy gaze—
we were supposed to
do a lot of things,
but talk is cheap, right?
